There Are Many Kinds of Facelifts And Related Procedures

Sep 8, 2008
With the passage of time the facial shape and contour begins to change as a result of laxity in the deeper facial tissues (muscle, facsia). This causes the face to begin to sag, especially along the jawline and neck.

The goal is to restore a youthful facial structure by repositioning the deep facial tissues to their original position. The goal isn't to pull the face or to create a tight-operated appearance. When done well, the results are extremely natural yet dramatic. No one, including friends and family, can detect surgery. Our patients simply look fresh, rested, and youthful.

Depending on the individuals anatomy, lifestyle, degree of age-related changes, and the amount of downtime and cost the individual is able to handle, several options are available to re-contour the face.

These consist of the Mini Facelift (Cheek Lift), Facelift, Full Face and Neck Lift. Each technique has a different aesthetic outcome, risk profile, and recovery time. It is important to note that every surgeon performs these procedure differently. The best way to assess whether a particular surgeon's facelift approach is consistent with your personal goals and taste, is to exam the surgeon's before and after photographs, visit or talk with past patients, compare incision styles, and recovery rates.

Mini Facelift (Cheek Lift)

The Mini Lift address the jowls, jawline, lower cheeks, and neck. This procedure has become extremely popular. The reasons are, it is very effective at treating the jawline and neck, it has a short recovery period, low risk, lower cost, lasting, and can easily be done under local anesthesia. There are a lot of different types of mini lifts being performed. Some procedures involve simply removing a small amount of skin. However, to create lasting results, the deep muscles (SMAS) of the face and neck need to be addressed. In this case, through very small incisions, the muscle layer of the face and neck are repositioned to a more youthful position.

The key to a natural and effective outcome is dependent on the vector the surgeon uses to elevate the deep tissues. Once the deep structures are restored to the more youthful configuration, the skin should simply redrape over the enhanced contour. The skin should not be pulled or tightened. These are the most important factors in preventing the "operated" look or the "wind tunnel" appearance that so many patients are afraid of.

This is the perfect procedure for individuals in their 40's and 50's with active lifestyles, or older patients who want to minimize downtime yet still get excellent results. The recovery is often about one week. Eventhough, a full facelift can sometimes result in more dramatic outcomes, especially in the neck, taking everything into consideration, many of our patients feel that this is the perfect balance. The results are extremely natural and the healing is very predictable.

There are many different definitions of a Mini Facelift or Mini Lift. In general, it is less invasive than a full face and necklift andrequires less downtime to recover. In our San Diego facial plasticsurgery practice, a mini facelift is one of the most popular procedures. Many patients choose the mini faceliftis because it creates excellent results with minimal downtime and cost. It addresses the jowls, jawline, lower cheeks, and neck. It can be used to rejuvenate the lower face in all age ranges. Adding to its popularity is that it has a short recovery period, low risk, lower cost, longer lasting, and can easily be done under local anesthesia. Some minilift procedures involve simply removing a small amount of skin. However, to create lasting results, the deep muscles (SMAS) of the face and neck need to be addressed. In this case, through very small incisions, the muscle layer of the face and neck are repositioned to a more youthful position.

The key to a natural and effective outcome is directly dependent on the vector (direction) the surgeon uses to elevate the deep tissues. Once the deep structures are restored to the more youthful configuration, the skin should simply redrape over the enhanced contour. The skin should not be pulled or tightened. These are the most important factors in preventing the "operated" look or the "windtunnel" appearance that so many patients are afraid of. This is the perfect procedure for individuals in any age range. Most patients are in their 40's and 60's with active lifestyles, or older patients who want to minimize downtime yet still get excellent results. The recovery is often about 1 week. Even though a full facelift can sometimes result in more dramatic outcomes, especially in the neck, taking everything into consideration, many of our patients feel that this is the perfect balance.

The mini lift procedure is complimented nicely with conservative uppereyelid blepharoplasty (eyelid tuck) and fat tranfer. The result leave patients looking softer, fresher and more rejuvenated yet very natural. It does not change the appearance; it simply restores the youthful look.

The Facelift addresses the upper cheeks, midface, jowls, jawline, corners of the mouth and neck. The difference between this procedure and the Micro Lift is that the upper cheeks and midface are addressed. Essentially, the same incisions are used in both procedures. Individuals with moderate amounts of skin and muscle laxity are good candidates for this procedure. The neck is treated with liposuction and the muscle is tightened and repositioned. The midface and upper cheeks are treated by repositioning the malar (cheek) fat pad back toward a more youthful position.

The target areas of a full face and neck lift are the upper cheeks, midface, jowls, jawline, corners of the mouth, and neck. This procedure is often used for patients with moderate-severe age related changes in the face and neck. Individuals who would benefit from this procedure are those who have heavy necks or those with a significant amount of laxity and redundant skin.

In specific cases in which the rest of the face is in good shape but the neck begins to sag, an isolated neck lift can be done. With the neck lift small incisions are placed under the chin and behind the ear, the extra fat is removed, the deep muscles are tightened, and the extra skin is removed. This procedure is often an excellent choice for men.

Neck liposuction is a versatile treatment that can help improve neck contour in a wide range of patients. This is a quick fix for individuals who have isolated problems with too much fat underneath the chin and neck. The best candidates are those with good skin elasticity and mild-moderate fat deposits. With the use of a liposuction, the fat underneath the skin is reduced allowing the skin to redrape over the smoother, more youthful neck contour.

There is simply no substitute for well done facelift. The effects can be dramatically rejuvenating and natural. The midface is lifted, enhancing the shape and fullness of the cheeks. The smooth youthful shape of the jawline is restored. Although surgeons generally never talk about how many years younger you will look after a procedure, most patients feel that they look 15-20 years younger. Depending on the individuals age and anatomy, the results can last 10-15 years.
