Oldtimer's Catfish Bait Recipe

Sep 8, 2008
If you want to get advice on which fish baits work best, ask the old timers and the professionals who routinely fish the areas in which you are planning to attempt to catch fish. Something that attracts the attention of the catfish is essential. Try something they can see well, or a good, stinky catfish bait recipe!

The areas in which you normally find catfish tend to be murkier waters, and for that reason, you have to have a way to catch the attention of your target. If you can put something into the water that they can see, you can attract their attention. Bright or light colors work best. For this reason, if you are fishing in cold water (winter) try something simple like a miniature marshmallow. In warm water, they melt too quickly, but a catfish will bite a marshmallow in a heartbeat if you can keep it on your hook, and they will stay on in cold water.

If you can not attract the sight of a catfish with something bright or light in color, you have to move on to their keen sense of smell. Some naturally smelly baits include oily mullet, dried grass shrimp, or sardines. Cubes of heavily scented cheese (such as sharp cheddar or limburger) work very well as catfish bait. Some other heavily scented baits used regularly with good success are such unexpected fishing bait treasures as coast deodorant soap.

Should you want to try some good Stinky catfish bait recipes and know how to fish it, you have come to the right place. Keep in mind that catfish love blood, they love garlic, and they love salt. Pretty much anything else added to the mixture will work as long as you can get it to hold together on a hook and as long as it SMELLS!

To keep your bait on your hook, consider using treble hooks. If you still have trouble (as is the case if you are using baits that are loose in texture like chicken livers and other types of home made stinky catfish bait recipes) consider using pieces of old pantyhose in which to wrap the bait, before placing it on the hook. This will keep it together and provide something a little more solid for you to hook

Here is a good stinky catfish bait recipe and how to use it:
1 Pound Cheese (sharp, smelly cheeses are best) melted
8 ounces of raw pork (you may substitute perch)
Whole head fresh garlic or 3-4 Tablespoons garlic salt
1 Can cheap dog or cat food
1 dozen minnows
Process these in a food processor and add enough flour to make a dough.

These work best on a treble hook or in the pantyhose wrap we mentioned earlier (that helps keep your bait in tact and secured to the hook) in order to keep the stink bait recipe for catfish securely on your hook. Another thing you can do is to put snaps on the end of your drop line. That way you can remove the hooks.
