Stratford; Up And Coming Region Of London

Sep 9, 2008
Stratford a borough in East London and formerly in Essex is regarded to by many to be one of the most deprived areas in all of London. This however is set to change with the announcement that Stratford will see a major development in the coming years. This is because the site will play host to the London Olympics in 2012 and through a cunning ploy by the Mayor of London Ken Livingstone, the building of a vast sports complex has been combined with the redevelopment of an entire area. Stratford in 2012 will be almost unrecognisable from its present form, attracting visitors from all over the world who want to see the globes biggest sporting festival. As such, a host of accompanying services such as car hire provisions, shops and restaurants are all being developed in order to cater for the needs of this gargantuan crowd.

At the heart of the Olympic Park will be the Stadium. It will be located on Marshgate Lane in Stratford and surrounded by pristine parks and gardens. It is proposed that the stadium will hold around eighty thousand people. With such an emphasis on legacy by the Olympic planners it is unsurprising that the stadium will in fact be largely temporary. At the end of the games the stadium will reduced to twenty five thousand seats and if reports are to be believed will be sold to the nearby local team, Leyton Orient. Naturally car hire companies are keen to place outlets as close to this stadium as possible to entice many of the spectators to use their services instead of using public transport.

Public transport to the site however will be developed considerably to ensure the games are eco-friendly. Part of this development will be the construction of Stratford International Station; this station will be a stop on the currently in use High Speed 1 rail that runs from London St Pancras to the channel tunnel and beyond. From next year international Eurostar trains will stop in Stratford and from this point it is doubtless that car hire and taxi companies will be built up in the area to accommodate the needs of travellers. The new station however is not within easy distance of the Stratford regional station, a fact that may require an extension to the Docklands Light Railway to create a link between the two.

It is not just the Olympics however that will give residents of Stratford a better way of life. part of the construction on the site includes the largest park space built anywhere in Europe in over one hundred years while the aquatics centre, tennis centre and velopark will provide residents with plenty of sporting amenities. The Olympic village will also be created into affordable housing for local residents while a new project 'Stratford City' will create a vast shopping centre within walking distance of the Olympic site. This development is viewed by many as more important to Stratford that the sporting festival in 2012, most believe that it will create large numbers of jobs for locals whilst providing them with a retail space to enjoy.

Whatever the opinion, with such a focus on Stratford it is certain to see an increase in the number of hotels, restaurants, cafes and car hire desks, not only to accommodate spectators during the Olympics but also to assist in the redevelopment of the area after the Olympic caravan has moved on.
