Watch Design: More Important the Quality?

Sep 9, 2008
When people looking for a watch, they usually look at the quality, design and the price of the watch then they can decide whether they want to by it. I found that most of the time, people tend to pay a lot of attention to the design of the watch and this is may be the more important factor to consider than the quality of the watch itself. Especially for the watch that is not very expensive, people tend to see the design fist and then have a look at the quality. This is because the design of the watch could present their taste which is very important when people is socialising. However, the quality may be consider as the first option only for the ones who is going to buy an expensive watch because they just want to buy the quality rather than design.

Even though it sounds depends on the type of the watch that design is the key influence, but the design seems to be the major cause of important factor, why? If you are the person who keep yourself updating on this market, you will see that for many of watch manufacturer who has reputable brand image still produce their watch in as many design as they can. They also invest fortune on their research and development function to find the design that will be in demand for their customer target groups and usually this amount of money is much grater than the budget that they pay for quality control!! The other reason why the design of the watch is very important is that the design is correspond to the user's social needs. We have to admit that the function of a watch is just to tell the time and this will be the same all over the world that apply to any brand. But the different we can see from each brand is the design that represent the social status and taste of the person who wear the watch.

For the people in younger age, they seem not to interested much on quality of the watch, what interest them is actually only the design. This is because when they are with their friends, they have to show that keeping in trend and not being out of date. As we can see that many of hi-end watch manufacturers try to produce the colourful and modern design to capture this market, even though these manufacturers have already gaining high volume of market share. This is because this target group is young people who love the design not just for the quality and it is really challenging for manufacturers to capture this market.

Mean while, older people still look for the design as equal as the quality but may be difference from younger people. However, does not matter who are the customers, it's quite obvious that everyone not just buy watch by considering only design or quality. They both have to come together and available at a reasonable price, so now you may learn some good point on what I have just described.

The art of designing one of the most recognizable watches in the world is far from a quick and painless process. There are many steps that go into producing the intricate and precise detail that is found in the Omega watch designs. And with a multitude of collections and models, the art of an Omega design begins at the drawing table.

The first step to creating an Omega watch is to draw out the concept and design. The design is created by the designers for Omega, who present their ideas to the board of directors. After long discussions and meetings, the designers and the board of directors come to an agreement on how the new Omega watch design should be.

Once the decision has been finalized concerning the main visual aspects, the designers go back to the drawing board. This is when they create the new Omega watch as a 3D model on the computer. This process is done collectively by the designers and the engineers to avoid designing a proposal that is not feasible from a technical point of view.

The next stage of the process is when the suppliers come into the picture. The prototyping phase is where the decisions are made for what kinds of material to use and what colors should be used for the dial and the hands. As soon as the first prototypes are produced, they are then submitted to the board of directors and the markets for approval of the final decision.

The first prototype that is produced for the Omega watch design is created by a special printer. The printer gives the watch the first real touch of what the new watch could possibly look like as a finished product. It is during the casting phase that the rest of the aesthetics are finalized. Everything from the colors to materials to the overall design has to be complete.

The last phase to designing the new Omega watch is passing the test. The overall design and movements get tested several times to make sure everything will be congruent with each other. It is essential that the design, movements and materials are all feasible and completed on the drawing board before the watch begins actual development. As soon as it passes all of the tests, production can begin.

As you can see, there is a great amount of detail that goes into creating a new Omega watch design. From drawing up the beginning ideas to passing the final tests, the overall process is time consuming to help produce the intricate designs you find in Omega watches.
