Understanding About Golden Retriever Problems

Sep 9, 2008
The Golden Retriever is truly a wonderful breed of dog, and it is really hard to find problems with them. They are large, athletic, natural looking, cheerful, steady tempered, and friendly. They are even great with children and are easy to train. There are however still certain Golden Retriever problems that may arise and which any owner or potential owner should be well aware of.

Separation anxiety is one of the most common Golden Retriever problems, but there are also a number of health problems that your dog may develop as well. This includes hip and elbow dysplasia, eye disease, von Willebrand's Disease, hypothyroidism, hereditary heart disease, epilepsy, cancer, arthritis and bloat. Although any of these can easily become serious, it is important to understand that there are some effective treatment options for each and which you can use if need be to help get your dog feeling back like his old self once again.

Hyperthyroidism is one of the most common Golden Retriever problems. In fact, it is recognized as being the most commonly diagnosed hormonal diseases found in dogs. Although it usually occurs between the ages of two to six years it can develop at any point in the dog's life. There are a few obvious symptoms that typically appear at the onset of this condition, including thin coat, loss of hair, dandruff and increased scratching. The specific treatment that should be used will depend on the individual dog, and you will want to speak to your veterinarian for further information on this.

Another of the most common Golden Retriever problems is eye disease. Golden Retrievers are very prone to eye diseases of all sorts, in particular hereditary cataracts.

It is a common and usually inherited disorder, one that actually has three different forms: Type 1 vWD, Types II vWD, and Type III vWD.

The good news is that there are not that many Golden Retriever problems, whereas with other breeds there often are. All you can really do is keep a watchful eye on your dog and if you ever notice any unusual symptoms, take them in to the veterinarian so they can get a proper assessment and treatment can be enforced if necessary. No one knows your dog better than you so it is imperative that you care for your pet and provide any treatment that they may need.

In order to guard them against as many health problems as possible, it is important that you provide them with the nutrition that they need, and make sure that they are getting lots of exercise. Getting your dog outside for walks is going to do them a world of good, as will socializing them with other people and other animals.

Especially if the dog is older these sorts of health problems can take a while to treat but the good news is that they are usually always treatable and will not cause any long-term damage.
