Patience Needed For Havanese Training

Sep 9, 2008
Pet owners looking for a small dog that is lovable and eager to please their owner may find the excited little Havanese breed pleasant company. During their early months Havanese training should be easy to accomplish as the breed is eager to please their owners and learning new tricks they can show off makes them exceptionally easy to teach. A little patience and time can go a long way towards letting the animal know the owner is pleased with its progress.

Positive reinforcement goes a long way to help the puppy understand what is expected of it and if made to feel they are the center of attention during training exercises, they will be exceptionally happy to show off what they have learned. Most importantly, through patience and understanding the Havanese puppy has to know who is in charge of its training and once that is established will offer little resistance in learning new tricks.

Just as people are not born with the natural ability to be a dog trainer, Havanese pups are not born to be obedient. Some of the Havanese problem behaviors are not necessarily because they want to be contrary, but because they do not know any better. Many Havanese pups are prone to have accidents and may be difficult to train, even when using a littler box. However, consistency and understanding can have them having fewer accidents over time.

Many Havanese owners believe that using cat litter in a box will help train the animal not to use the floor, but the puppy can become ill if they eat the litter. Most veterinarians and dog trainers recommend the use of paper pellets in a box that can attract a young Havanese pup, helping it to learn where to do his business. Although daily walks and running are needed for it to receive adequate exercise, it may not always do what comes naturally while outside.

The Havanese breed may also be somewhat playful, almost teasing during training sessions and the owner will need to make sure the dog knows who is in charge. If the owner cannot be around to train the animal while they are pups, it could lead to the animal becoming lonely and bored.

Havanese pups when left alone too long may start to entertain themselves, and that is not always a good thing as these frisky critters can have a destructive nature in their playing.

A fenced-in yard or other outdoor area in which the Havanese can run and play will be appreciated by the young dog, and by being able to release their energy in a more productive manner, they tend to be more willing to learn other tricks as well as be less destructive.

Patience and understanding is needed when training a Havanese puppy and while being firm in commands is important, the puppy also needs to feel loved and a part of the family.
