Asset Tracking Basics for Dummies

Sep 9, 2008
Companies all over the world do not just work with profits and deficits. In order to total a company's true value, asset tracking is something that all companies should take into consideration. This will especially come in handy when a company wants to get ready to sell all of their assets to another owner. But when you just want to take inventory of all the assets that belong to the company, you will want to consider purchasing asset tracking software that can be used and updated at any point in time. This will benefit the company is many different ways.

The problem with traditional asset tracking is that when companies affix labels to their equipment or track the equipment by its serial numbers, stolen items will easily be able to be altered and never have a chance of being recovered. And when people need to take inventory of the assets, they can to do this by hand, either by reading each individual tag or by using a point and shot handheld scanner to read a barcode that contains the assets number. These tags are also susceptible to damage or alteration if theft should occur.

Asset software is your best chance at keeping detailed records of all your company's assets by their serial number, barcode numbers, descriptions, and locations. Certain asset software will also allow you to affix barcodes to materials and machinery on the inside of the asset, not visible at all from the outside. And the tagging scanners will be able to catch the barcode when an employee is taking inventory without having to open up the asset to physically see the barcode tagging. Asset software also allows a person to read multiple tags at once so that taking inventory is much faster and easier than ever before.

Asset software is not just for keep track of your assets. It can also keep track of any assets that are moved, lost, stolen, or sold off. And with multiple scanners located throughout the company, you will be able to change information with ease every time the status of an asset is changed. This will increase the accuracy of the records your are tracking, and it will also reduce the number of assets that could be lost or stolen on paper, but still exist somewhere out on the floor.

When you switch to asset tracking software for your company, you will eliminate a lot of time and energy spent on taking inventory. The point and shoot processing of the tags will increase accuracy and give your company a new sense of organization and streamlined record keeping. And if you just have a few employees trained on the system, this will dramatically improve the paperwork and other red tape that a manager or supervisor will have to go through just to move some of the company's assets, even if it is only for a short time. Organize your assets with the best asset tracking software on the market that can keep track of everything the company has.
