How To Decorate And Ice A Cake

Did you know that the first cakes baked in America were small loaves of sweet bread? Today, we are blessed with a huge repertoire of cake recipes that are just as sumptuous as they are beautiful. This should make any homemaker delighted, as they are now able to choose from a wide variety of cakes to bake. Virtually anyone can bake wonderful cakes with practice and imagination. It is important to invest in the right cake decorating equipment.

The first thing you need is a smooth icing to cover the surface of the cake; make sure you cool them completely before you begin. Crumbs can damage the icing and makes your cake decorating look unprofessional, so start with a thin layer of frost just to cover and lock them before you start application of the regular layer. Once you set this layer, place it in the refrigerator for 20 minutes. This will set all crumbs, locked in nicely and ready for the next step. Now you can have fun decorating you cake without having to worry about those dreaded crumbs suddenly appearing.

You may now apply the icing layer using an icing spatula Start at the sides by smoothing the icing nicely using the icing spatula. Try dipping the spatula in cold water and see the difference; it makes the smoothing join so much easier! Dip it again in cold water as you hold the spatula horizontally over the top, and start smoothing the surface of the cake. Hold the spatula firmly using both hands and begin skimming the top of the icing; drag it towards you starting from the furthest point.

Some cake decorating experts claim that the hardest part in cake decoration would be learning to smooth the icing. Practice is crucial to make you an expert. Once you have it down, show it off, even a cake without many decorations which is clean and smooth will make a perfect offering.

You can even use sugar coated powders ideas of icing to decorate. You can use pure dusted sugar powder for an elegant look or use stencils for a more complicated effect. One good addition is to see edible cake decorations. If it fits your theme, try using colorful candies to make your cake more noticeable!

Want a more sophisticate look? Try using cardboard combs for a textured feel. Piping can be created with a pastry a, fit a metal end to the tip and hold it together with a coupler. This is your most important tool for cake decorating; you can make lines, words, shells, flowers, and many other designs on the top or sides of the cake. Start decorating your cake by using a steady pressure and do not fill the piping bag with more than one cup of icing. You may use your other hand to move the tip safely without smudging. It is wise to find out everything you can about piping before you begin.

For complicated cake decorating creations, fondant is used. They are kneaded and rolled into pieces and used to cover cakes for that sleek classy feel. They create a wonderful 3-D design effect, which in turn lends a very pleasing effect to the cake.
