Get Comfy With Airbeds For Festie Airheads

Sep 10, 2008
Let me paint a picture for you of me last Tuesday, in a bit of a Rolph Harris kind of way; can ya see what it is yet? It is midday; I am in a suburban street in torrential rain, desperately looking through a rucksack for a door key. I am wearing wellies, an anorak, a pair of shades - despite the grey sky - and a cowboy hat. I am covered in mud so thick that even the heavy downpour cannot wash it out of my belongings. My hair is knotted and I haven't slept for days. Have you got the picture yet? It's me just back from living in a field for a few days at a festival.

I'm generally not that good at field dwelling. I like bed and breakfasts, hotel rooms, warmth not gale force wind. I have really weak shoulders, well actually I'm just a bit lazy, so don't like rucksacks with mats and pans flapping and clashing. I'm also an eternal optimist, believing that the British summer will spill its rays of warmth my way just because it is August. It is for all these reasons that I end up camping at festivals with just a tent and a sleeping bag. I take the sleepless nights of lumpy ground dwelling as part and parcel of the whole experience, been there, done that, got the tee shirt and matching bags under my eyes!

This trip however, I was stunned and amazed and quite frankly hugely jealous of my camping companions when they woke up bright eyed and bushy tailed. Then I sneaked a peek at their secret. They had inflatable beds. What decadent luxury for festival dwelling, surely! My mother used to pack airbeds when we went camping, but she had a Volvo estate, with room for air pumps-a-plenty alongside the obligatory cool-box, double duvets and dog basket to boot. Not something my rucksack is able to accommodate, so how did my companions manage to contain a portable comfort zone in a back pocket?

It turns out that the airbeds of today come in single layer, double layer, singles, doubles, self inflating, built in pumps, flocked, lined, skirted and I wouldn't be surprised to find out that they were also jet propelled! It turns out that having a comfy night's sleep is no longer a luxury when it comes to tent dwelling, it's a valid option. A standard single mattress suitable for camping comes with a chargeable pump, a built in pillow, folds neatly into a bag smaller than a tent and is flocked to keep the cold out of booze soaked kidneys. Mother would be proud. Believe it or not, you can even get ones that have comfort control at the touch of a button, just in case you have a sudden princess moment and think you can feel a pea.

We're not talking temporary comfort zones here either. These beds quite easily pass as guest beds back at home, being so cozy that Aunty Marge would be happy to sleep on it for a few nights; which justifies splashing the cash on the comfort. And don't worry about the once upon a time nightmares of slow punctures, if an airbed can survive the trials of festival abuse, it can handle anything. So next time I endure the summer showers in pursuit of musical ear candy, I will return looking fresh faced and gladly rested. Mud is good for the skin, and a good nights kip is good for the spirit; taking a comfy bed makes for a veritable festival spa break that won't leave you feeling deflated.
