Shar Pei Nutrition Fundamentals

Sep 10, 2008
Dog foods are not created equally when comparing their qualities. The dog itself is the best judge when it concerns the quality of the dog food. If you find your dog is enjoying the food without any apparent psychological or physical complications, you can rest assured about the good quality of your dog food. Economy, Regular, Premium, Super Premium and Performance are the standard classifications of commercial dog food.

Like any other dog breed, the Shar Pei has a simple stomach structure along with a short digestive tract. Shar Pei lacks saliva enzyme amylase, which is an essential food enzyme used to deal with pre-digesting starches.

Although Shar Pei dogs can be adapted to foods rich in vegetable proteins, they perform better when they are fed with foods rich in meat proteins as well as animal fats. Shar Pei nutrition essentially depends on two factors: nutrient sources similar to native environment and proper balance of nutrients in food.

The best Shar Pei nutrition requires that vitamins and minerals be added to the food offered. But the source of nutrients may vary for different breeds. For example, if one mineral calcium balance works nicely for the Shar Pei, it may not necessarily serve the purpose completely for other breeds. Additionally, dogs belonging to the same breed may need different level of nutrients in their diet. A wide array of factors such as age, gender, weight and health history may be responsible for the differences. For an active Shar Pei, the supply of vitamin B complex would be much higher than for a more sedate dog.

Many experienced breeders believe that the best diet for a Shar Pei comes from homemade food prepared with fresh, quality ingredients without any artificial preservatives. Shar Pei nutrition can be attained with the perfect combination of native foods and additional nutritional compounds. Native foods may include beets, sweet potatoes, rice, corn, wheat, poultry, oxen and pork. In addition, you must always remember that a perfect Shar Pei nutrition can be acquired with additional fiber and carbohydrate content. However, avocado, potato, ocean fish, beef and lamb should not be fed to a Shar Pei.

So when you really care about Shar Pei nutrition then possibly homemade treat are the best alternative. Try these two recipes called Cheesy Garlic Crunchy Snacks and Peanut Butter Treats. The ingredients of Cheesy Garlic Crunchy Snacks are two cups of shredded cheddar cheese, one half cup of melted margarine, two cups of whole-wheat flour, one clove sliced garlic and one-quarter cup of milk.

Preheat the oven to 350?-375?. Mix all the ingredients until it becomes a dough, then roll out onto a floured board and cut into fun shapes and bake for 20-25 minutes until golden brown.

Peanut Butter Treats ingredients are two tablespoon of canola oil, one half cup of peanut butter, one cup of water, one cup of whole-wheat flour and two cups of white flour. Preheat the oven to 350?-375?. Mix all the ingredients together except the flour. Add the flour slowly to the mixture until it becomes smooth dough.
