How To Raise A Yorkie Rescue Dog

Sep 10, 2008
If you are considering adopting an adult Yorkshire Terrier (a Yorkie) for your next pet good for you! There are thousands that need good, loving homes.

If you have received your Yorkie rescue dog from a Yorkie breed rescue group, then you have had a lot of help in finding out the Yorkshire terrier information you need to know in order to adjust. If not, there is still hope for you and your dog to get along together.

Most Yorkshire Terriers in rescues or animal shelters are male. Most are over ten pounds, which means their frames are sturdier than show-quality or teacup sized Yorkies. A purebred Yorkie often has faults that would get them disqualified from the show ring. Yorkies take just as much time and effort for caring as you would a big dog. Although they don't need as much exercise as a big dog, they do need a lot of grooming and attention. Yorkies are not the best breed for those who have never had a dog before, in general (You'll always find exceptions to this rule.)

Over the decades, Yorkies have been bred to be companion dogs, to be guard dogs and to kill rodents. Although there are Yorkies who will ignore small fuzzy pets, you should not tempt fate by getting a Yorkie if you already have pet hamsters, mice, rats, gerbils or guinea pigs. Keep in mind that Yorkies will bark (or yap) more than some breeds of dog, because that's one of the things they were bred for.

When Yorkies warm up to you, they stick to you like a furry shadow. They have to be where you are, know what you are doing, and inspect what's in your hands. Get used to being followed around. If you have a supervisor at work that stares at you and doesn't actually help you, then you know what to expect. However, the Yorkie will not criticize you and will often seem to silently approve your efforts.

Expect your Yorkie rescue dog to be nervous for the first couple of weeks, until the realization sinks in that they will not be suddenly taken away. Then expect your Yorkie rescue dog to follow you around everywhere.

Most Yorkie rescue dogs, though, are well over the breed standard's seven pounds! Yorkies need to have their coat clipped once a month, need to go to the vet nearly as often and need to eat hard food to help their notoriously weak teeth.

Yorkies also often have trouble being able to hold their urine before they have a chance to go outside. However, these clever dogs can usually be successfully treated to use a cat littler box. You need to be prepared for accidents and how to clean them up. If you've never housebroken a dog before, you will need to get a lot of training on how best to do it. And never be afraid to ask for help with your Yorkie.
