September Bike Accidents Prove Fatal in California

Sep 10, 2008
California is a beautiful place for cyclists to bike. The scenery is beautiful, the weather is great, and many cities have bike lanes in place to limit the risk of bike accidents. Nonetheless, there are still a number of hazards present at all times throughout the year; especially in September.

From 2002-2006, September was the worst month for bike accidents in California, averaging 1095 injuries and 12 deaths each year. There are a number of unique risks that present themselves during this month. By understanding the dangers and preparing for them, you'll limit your chances of being involved in a September bike accident in California.

Weather
Most of California, especially the southern region, stays quite hot and dry throughout September which provides cyclists with an ideal environment for biking. However, many areas along the coast experience fog in the mornings and the limited visibility that comes with it. In order to avoid bike accidents, you should always be prepared for fog with reflectors and lights to increase your visibility.

Traffic
September is "back to school" time in California with thousands of high school, college, and university students using their bikes more often to get to and from campus. There is also more traffic throughout certain times of the day as non-cyclists are using motor vehicles to get to school as well. To limit the risk of being in a bike accident, you should find a route that avoids the busy roadways.

Mindset
Summer is over and most people are getting back to the swing of things. While this might seem to have little impact on the amount of September bike accidents in California, it actually plays a significant role. People are more stressed than in summer months and more aggressive on the road. Like any other month, you should practice defensive cycling in order to avoid collisions.

While cycling on California's roads can be dangerous, it is important to keep things in perspective. Although there are thousands of bike accidents each year, there are many more motor vehicle accidents as well. The most important thing for your safety is to always be prepared.

In the same way you wouldn't drive a vehicle without a seatbelt, mirrors and lights you should also never leave home on your bike without a fitted helmet, reflectors, and lighting. By following the rules of the road, avoiding congested areas, and having a good sense of awareness you'll limit your chance of being in a bike accident and give yourself the ability to enjoy the wonderful cycling weather that California has to offer for months on end, including September.
