Flooding: One Reason For Wet Document Restoration

Sep 10, 2008
The loss of cherished items is a devastating blow to all of us. When flooding hits your home, the chances are excellent that documents, papers, writings, photographs and other material will get compromised, possibly wet and ruined by these flood waters. It is a is a real threat!

People living in flood zones have experienced this type of devastation and may even have taken some necessary steps to provide safety for their documents by putting them into waterproof safes, storage places or in other ways. They also might have had the forethought to obtain flood insurance. These are all great steps to take to provide safety and help when the waters rise and the flooding begins.

But, what happens if your photographs that you so proudly display become part of the flood damage? What about those materials and documents you, "... just never got around to putting safely away?" What do you do to salvage these precious, priceless, and sometimes even very important documents?

First off, you try to salvage as much of your possessions as possible. If you have insurance, this is the time to let your insurance agent know and start your claim. In this way, you will have the funds to help in the refurbishment of your possessions. This advice goes for commercial records and documents as well as items in homes. From that point on, after you have done your best at the salvage effort and realize that you need help to restore your possessions is when to call in the professionals. Remember, the professionals that you call in need to be expert, wet document restoration professionals who deal mainly with commercial and residential properties that have been water damaged.

Wet document restoration professionals use specific methods to help you get your items back to the way they were before they were so badly damaged. One way is air drying wherein your wet document is laid onto a clean, dry, straight surface for drying in the open air. A fan can also be utilized for more air circulation. Freeze drying is another method used where items are frozen and then defrosted and allowed to dry slowly. This way the moisture from the item has time to slowly evaporate. It takes extra time and is more expensive for that reason, but seems to be better for the item being dried out and salvaged.

Being ready for any disaster is better than having to clean up the mess after the fact. Avoiding the need for document freeze drying services is better than having the need for them. Some of us seem to wind up with the latter. So, if you do need a document drying specialist, time is really of the essence, so use the internet to get some names of experts on document drying. Utilize your local paper, yellow pages or community news. The Chamber of Commerce is another good source as is word of mouth. But, get the help immediately and save your possessions!
