Frequently Asked Questions about Air Conditioners

Aug 17, 2007
What is a heat pump?

Some air conditioners do come with a heat pump when it is necessary to use the unit both for heating and cooling purposes. What the heat pump actually does is it reverses the refrigeration cycle and can provide heat to a room instead of cold. Often used in buildings it can maintain comfortable temperatures inside, even when the temperature outside is something around -15 degree Celsius.

What is EER?

EER is the acronym for Energy Efficiency Ratio. This ratio gives us an idea of how efficient a heating or cooling device is by comparing the heat output and the power input. The higher the EER is the better is your device and the more power will you save.

Can air conditioners spread viruses and bacteria?

Strictly speaking, yes they can. But it is not as serious an issue as it is sometimes made out to be. In fact, air conditioners are as responsible for spreading these as you and me or any other ventilation system, yes, air conditioners can make a room too dry for some peoples' liking and this can prompt them to think that air conditioners are harmful. But there is little meat to their argument.

The air conditioner is running, but the room is not getting cooled. Why?

There can be a host of reasons for such a problem. The problem can be very simple like the machine being switched on in the fan mode. But it can be much worse. If you find every setting is what they need to be and yet the unit is not functioning properly call for professional help.

The air conditioner is running, but the air flow seems less than normal. Why?

Such a problem can generally be traced back to unclean filters. However, if you have taken proper care of the filters, and you think that is not the issue, then it is best to call a trained technician.

Are refrigerants harmful to the ozone layer?

While some do harm the ozone layer, all don't. Ideally no refrigerant should be released in the environment and so there would be no question of it harming the ozone layer. Any competent company employing competent technicians are expected to follow this in principle. But fact is that accidents do happen and refrigerants do get released. So there is a constant demand for newer, better and safer refrigerants and a lot of resources have been invested towards developing such refrigerants.
