What to Look for When Deciding to Buy a Digital Camera

Sep 11, 2008
Even in these tough times the majority of people out there are able to afford digital cameras and this is thanks largely to this area being highly competitive, however you must be aware when looking to purchase a digital camera because there are hundreds of possible features you can have and you need to identify which features you need and subsequently which camera contains all these features and does the best job.

Your first port of call is to give serious consideration over what the purpose of the digital camera is. If you search for digital cameras online you will see that the prices varies considerably, you can indeed pick up an excellent digital camera for slightly over $100 however at the other end of the spectrum you will find digital cameras retailing for over $1000.

The most important feature to consider in a digital camera is the image resolution and quality and this is measured by megapixels. The higher the megapixel value, the higher the quality of the picture. To help you decided what value of megapixels you require in your camera, it is useful to consider what size prints you need from your photos. As a general guide it is worth noting that a 1-mg camera can create a 3-by-5-inch (7.5 by 13 cm) photo-quality print; a 2-mg camera will make a 5-by-7-inch (13 by 18 cm) print; a 3-mg camera will make an 8-by-10-inch (20 by 25 cm) print, and a 6-mg camera will make a 9-by-13-inch (23 by 33 cm) print and so on. Bear in mind that what is stated above is only a guide, lower value megapixel digital cameras can indeed give you photos up to any size you desire however the quality will not be up to scratch.

After considering megapixels, you need to give serious consideration to the actual package that comes with the digital camera, there are some obvious extras to look for which bring convenience and these include a cable for your computer, image-editing software that works with your computer and for the lesser part removable memory, this is of course useful for the heavy use.

All of the digital cameras you compare should have standard items such as a LCD, digital/optical zoom, built in flash and timers etc. However also play close attention to non standard features which do vary tremendously. Camera technology makes huge advancements year in, year out and some features in recent years include red eye correction, face detection advanced automatic adjustments tailored to each individual shot.

This article should be used as a starting point to help you decide which camera is best suited to you and used as a guide for the technical points, however please also bear in mind that common sense will also play a big part when you are comparing features and deciding which camera to purchase and if common sense fails, simply ask yourself the following question, Do I really need that feature?
