Highly Recommended Activities for Anger Management

Sep 12, 2008
Anger affects everyone, not just adults. Its repercussions can sometimes be devastating to a person's life. Many people are unaware of the damaging effects of not controlling their anger. Even children can be a victim of rage, as they are not yet mature enough to perceive it as a problem. To address the need to control anger, there are many recommended anger management activities. These help people with anger issues cope with the seemingly uncontrollable emotion.

Counseling

Visiting the shrink is probably the first thing a person ought to do to rationalize anger. In counseling, you and your psychologist can work out the causes and consequences of your rage. You simply tell him or her the story behind every experience that might have triggered you to blow a fuse, while at the same time trying to develop techniques to change your reactions toward these events. However, counseling is not for everyone. Children, for instance, can't exactly verbalize their feelings quite as well as adults rendering the whole thing impossible.

Support Groups

Support group meetings gather individuals with anger issues to discuss the motives behind their rage. Knowing that there are others who experience what you go through is comforting enough, helping you develop the courage to change. Testimonials and success stories of individuals who were able to overcome anger issues could also provide hope, making support groups one of the top anger management activities.

Camps and Retreats

Camps and retreats are good venues to release negative emotions as it allows you to meet other people with the same problem as you. Also, camps have different activities such as sessions, games, and consultations that could be fun and at the same time helpful in sorting out your issues.

Exercise

Exercise is also a good anger management activity because it distributes the energy of the body to other areas giving you a feeling of relief. Negative emotions are discharged once the body moves and muscles relax. After exercising, there's a feeling of relaxation due to the smooth flow of energy in the body. This can be as simple as climbing the stairs or as strenuous as lifting weights or swimming. You may also want to try sports like badminton, tennis, or basketball as these are rigorous and competitive at the same time. Outdoor activities such as hiking and camping out can also be a breath of fresh air to a person experiencing stress.

Other Activities

Young children may not benefit from counseling and similarly themed activities. As such, simple things, such as playing games, answering worksheets, solving puzzles, or learning how to play an instrument can do the trick. These are as enjoyable as they are educational. Their attention must be diverted from the cause of their anger and focused instead on activities that promote learning. One must be patient with children because they will not immediately demonstrate any changes in behavior. It's a must to be repetitive so that they learn through practice.

Changing your behavior will not be easy, but through these recommended anger management activities, you will slowly inculcate positive behavior. You just have to try as much activity as you can so that you'll know exactly what works for you.
