Strategy for shorthanded poker cash games

Sep 12, 2008
Shorthanded poker is a fascinating game. The major differences from full ring are that hand values change and their ranges are much wider than full ring. Some plays that were reckless at a full table can be profitable 6 handed.

Raising any pocket pair from any position is a profitable line in 6 max cash games. You don't have to worry as much about the players behind you and it is much less likely that you will face a re-raise preflop.

So what are the main differences between 6 max and full ring from a strategic standpoint?

* As was previously stated, pocket pairs can be opened from any postion profitably 6 handed, including under the gun.

* The relative strength of your hands increase. You can typically go all the way and commit your stack with two pair against a loose aggressive opponent.

* A majority of pots will be played heads up or 3 handed. Because the game is more fast paced there will be numerous EV spots for the good player.

*You can make plenty of squeeze plays from the blinds. The fast paced and aggressive nature of 6 max cash games allow you to push your preflop equities.

So you still can't decide whether you prefer 6 max or ring games. Well ask yourself the following questions and add up how many times you answered YES

* Do like not to worry about short term swings as long as your expected value is higher ? Do you play to push your edges in as many situations as you can.

* Do you like playing a lot of pots? Do you prefer creating a loose aggressive image at the table to get paid on your strong hands?

* Are you a grinder? Your hourly at the 6 max tables will be higher because the volume of hands that you will see. Do you like to multi-table?

* Do you like incorporating player reads into your decisions? Because the game is short handed you will always have the opportunity to use reads to your advantage.

The bottom line is that the best game really comes down to your affinities and skill set. It also depends on your aversion to risk.
