Launching a New Online Community for Women

By Martin Reed
Sep 12, 2008
The newest online community dedicated solely to women has now launched. Female Forum was designed to be easy to use with high quality content. The existing online communities that cater to women are not particularly intuitive - they often struggle in terms of poor design, overwhelming information and a confusing interface. It was time to offer a website for women that was easy to use, welcoming and friendly.

Sometimes you can arrive at websites and be completely overwhelmed. Either their content is not well presented, or the site is so full of unnecessary features it is almost impossible to use. Female Forum was designed to only include the features that people want and use. The site has a clear interface, is easy to use and includes a friendly, welcoming community with female members from different backgrounds.

When launching a new online community it is important to have a memorable domain name and a unique and original logo and design. What many people forget about however, is the work that is required behind the scenes.

For an online community project to be successful, you need to ensure you are using the right software. Do you want to use a custom made solution that may be more costly to develop but better suited to your needs, or an off the shelf solution which may not be perfect for you but will almost definitely be cheaper? Will you be creating all the content for your site yourself? If not, you will need to hire writers. Make sure you hire the right people for the job by asking for references and examples of the previous work.

Similarly, if you are looking for a site coder do not always plump for the cheapest quote. You want professionalism and quality. This is not always found with the lowest price.

Do not agonise over making your site perfect. Remember that a site is never finished, particularly an online community. Your website should be constantly evolving and improving. If you hold off launching your site until it is perfect, you may just find that it never launches.

When your site is finally ready for launch you need to ensure you have content for visitors to read. There is absolutely no point in launching an online community without content. Make some posts yourself. Get friends to post. Get family to post. An online community lives and dies by its content. You could attract ten thousand visitors to your online community on the day of launch, but if it has no content nobody will be interested.

After launch, keep plugging your community. Promote your site using a number of different methods, and never stop creating content. Do not lose your early momentum as you will find it hard to get it back. Treat every new member like royalty to ensure they develop a relationship with you and your new community.

Online communities are challenging to get off the ground. By creating content before launch, continuing to create content after launch and using a number of different promotional methods, you can develop a successful online community and perhaps be the next community to launch after Female Forum.
