Grab the Best Hair Cutting Scissors For That Salon - Worthy Look Right in the Comfort of Your Own Home

Sep 13, 2008
You might think that it is quite intimidating to try cutting your own hair, what with the endless hair implements and stylist tools to choose from. You need not fret for basically all you need is to invest in a sturdy pair of professional hair scissors. For the men, a few strategies from Roger Sturk can come in quite handy.

For a little under $40, I purchased a hair cutting kit with an electric cutter, combs, scissors, and a set of cutting guides of different lengths. The kit also included a cape to keep falling hair from lodging between me and my shirt. I also bought a hand mirror and a good hair brush. Finally, and most importantly, I purchased a trim comb, an inexpensive plastic gadget, available at most drug stores, that holds three double-edged razor blades, and is perfect for trimming hair at the neckline. Once you have all your equipment, and are standing intrepidly in front of a sink and a large bathroom mirror, you are ready to mow your hair.

Trimming around the ears is a personal design decision. I don't do it. I simply comb my hair back over the ears, and it looks fine, sort of Kennedyesque. If, however, you choose to trim around the ears, use scissors. Move slowly, cutting a little at a time until you achieve the desired look.

Trimming the neckline at the back is the most challenging hair cutting task. You could do it with the electric cutter, but it takes a steady hand and the ability to move in the correct direction while looking at the back of your head in two mirrors with the cutter running. It could be a disaster. I don't advise it. This is where the trim comb proves its worth. It can be easily aligned to ensure a nice trim line at the neck exactly where you want it.

Want to get nice fringe bangs? These tips from Paul Jones might just do the trick.

To increase the depth of your facial features, the choppy fringe bangs style can be a good choice. Cutting with scissors followed by texturizing creates the choppy effect. Adding touches of color to the bangs can create fantastic results. Cutting uneven lengths creates asymmetrical bangs. In this style, one side may be cut shorter than the other or the middle may be cut shorter than each side. Depending on the look you want to get, these differences can be very subtle or extreme. For the funkiest looks, extreme asymmetrical fringe bangs can be your style.

If you are planning to cut your own fringe bang hairstyles, use proper haircutting scissors and do not use kitchen or sewing scissors. Shorter blade scissors are easier to control and they fit your fingers and hands well. Hand scissors with blades of no more than 5 1/2 to 6 1/2" will be the best for cutting your fringe bangs at home. Before cutting, shampoo and dry your hair in the normal way and avoid using rinse out or leave in conditioners that can harden soft texture hair making it difficult for the trimming.
