For anyone who is undergoing an intense home workout, the secret to success is providing your body with the energy it needs not only to get through the home exercise program, but also through the rest of the day. Items such as energy bars and supplements are a good place to start. To really increase your energy output and enjoy the health benefits, include these 5 power-boosting foods in your diet every day:

1. Bananas

This is one of the best snacks around when it comes to raising your energy level for an intense home workout. This type of fruit contains carbohydrates, but they are easily broken down by your body to give you the power you need right away. Bananas are also well known for being high in potassium, a nutrient that needs to be replenished frequently. This is because potassium is an electrolyte that is lost through stress and heavy exercise. To further increase the effects of bananas, mix it with a protein-rich food.

2. Yogurt

The active ingredient in yogurt that will get you through a home exercise program like the P90X is magnesium. This nutrient not only helps your body to process carbohydrates and proteins needed for energy, but is also helps to release that energy into the body properly. This is why it is a great addition to bananas. If you don't care for yogurt, try things such as cheese and skim milk that are low in harmful fats.

3. Oatmeal

There is a reason this food is used most often at breakfast time. This food contains important components that will lengthen the life of your body's energy sources. Therefore, consuming oatmeal will ensure you have enough get-up-and-go to make it past your high-level home workout and through to your next meal with ease. The vitamin B found in this power food also helps convert carbohydrates. As an added benefit, large flake oats contain low GI carbs that take longer to digest so that it lengthens the lifespan of it's nutrients and keeps you fuller longer.

4. Green Tea

You probably know about the great antioxidant properties of green tea, but did you know that the EGCG antioxidant it contains causes your body and mind to work more efficiently? This means that a home workout like the P90X will be more effective. Green tea is a great way to keep hydrated as well. This will help your body regulate its temperature, move energy through your muscles, and prevent you from wearing out.

5. 80% Dark Chocolate

Chocolate does contain some caffeine and sugars, but when you eat small amounts of it each day, the health and energy benefits are fantastic. The high level of cocoa contains an abundance of antioxidants and compounds such as phenylethylamine that can provide you with long-lasting energy for a home exercise program like the P90X that requires an abundance of energy. It also helps your body to process other nutrients, raise your iron levels, and other pleasant side effects involving the hormone dopamine.

These power foods will give you the nutrients you need to continue through your day after an intense home workout. You won't have to deal with fatigue, which will not only make you feel better, but will help you keep up the momentum for your home exercise program.
