Creating Custom Closet Systems - Tips For Getting The Best Results

Custom closet systems give you the opportunity to make use of as much storage space as you can while adding a tidy and rich look to any room. In order to be happy with the result, the closet system needs to hold everything you need it to in a way that is effortless to use. Here are a few tips to help you get the results you need in order to make your home's storage work for you.

Take Inventory

Everything needs is own 'home' in order to keep things neat and organized. To do this, find out exactly what is going into the space. If it is a child's room, maybe there will be toys and games. Front closets often have umbrellas, hats, and coats. The easiest way for you to know exactly what kind of 'homes' your closet needs is to make a detailed list of what you have.

Write down what kinds of items need to be organized and how many of each item you have. From there, you can determine which items will be hung, folded, sat in drawers, or in need of a basket. Don't forget small items like belts or ties. Also, include how much space each of these things will need in order to be stored properly.

Make The Space User Friendly

Closet systems need to be easily accessible to those using the area. For young children, keep items they use most often lower in the design so they can use the area without help. If you and your spouse are sharing the closet, divide the space in half so that it is possible for both of you to use the closet at the same time. You can have rods on either side with drawers in the center or have the rod systems in the center with drawers on either side.

Consider The Overall Appearance

While this depends mostly on your personal preference, you should have an idea of what you would like to have before designing the closet systems. The storage can be left open to the room, which is great for small spaces because there are no doors to work around. Some people dislike seeing the storage in the space and opt for a door on each section. The wood and hardware can add a nice touch to the space while keeping everything hidden. However, this does increase the cost of your project.

Another option is to add a set or a couple sets of doors to the storage area. The doors can be together or on either side of a set of drawers, just keep in mind that bigger doors need more room to open them. Adding sliding or folding doors is one way around this issue, but again, you need to have space for the doors.

Other design concepts to consider involves whether you prefer drawers, baskets, or a combination of both for items such as underclothes and socks. Drawers can have dividers to keep everything straight even with the opening and closing of the drawers. Baskets can hold more items, but require a little extra attention to keep them organized.

Whether you have a large home in Minneapolis or a small condo in Chicago, closet systems function at their best when they are organized. A custom closet system gives you the opportunity to make your home more personal and really work for you. It keeps everything looking its best while holding more items because you can make use of the entire vertical space. To create the ideal storage space, simply make a note of what the space needs to hold, who will be using the area, and what you would like the system to look like.
