Infant Sleep Pattern

Sep 14, 2008
A baby will develop his or her sleeping habits a little at a time. Their sleeping patterns are fully formed by about 3-months. Following are some tips for identifying and fostering infant sleeping patterns. After all, when a new baby in a household sleeps, everyone else can too.

We all know that a newborn will sleep a lot. The newest babies will sleep and eat on demand. You should respond to those needs quickly. The pattern they follow is wake, eat, poopy, and then sleep and then it starts all over again. Make a note of the timing for these events and make a chart.

Always, unless you want a whole passel of other problems, have the baby sleep alone in his or her bed. A new baby will be very comforted and sleep well when cocooned in a receiving blanket while being held. They can get very used to being held and may develop a bad habit. As stated, encourage them to sleep alone and in their bed or bassinet. It is very tempting to put the baby in bed with you but don't make it a habit. It is unsafe and is contrary to developing a long term sleeping pattern.

Don't worry if the baby won't sleep alone at first. Sleeping alone is a habit that the baby will develop with practice. Baby sleep habits are not consistent for every baby. Try swaddling the newborn and laying him down on his back or side for sleep at least a couple of times a day. You can increase the number of times the baby sleeps alone gradually as the days go on.

At dusk darken the bedroom where the baby sleeps and discourage stimulation other than quiet time. Keep the household quiet and somber. At nightfall take care of the needs of the baby; sleep, eat, and poop. Then, of course, lay the baby down again. Resist with the baby. This will only disrupt the cycle you are trying to imprint. This tip will encourage your newborn to sleep at night and be awake during the daytime.

Some feel it is easier for the infant to be in the parents room or even in their bed. When nursing this can help gain access to both mother and baby. The comforting warm of the mother will definitely help the baby sleep well. "Safe sleep" should be stressed here if you put the baby in bed with you. Limit the number of pillows and blankets nearest the infant. Smothering is a very real risk or rolling over the baby while you are asleep.i

When the newborn is 3 months old it is about the right time to start putting him or her in their OWN room in their OWN bed. As stressed earlier it is very important for your baby to learn to sleep alone and in his own room. I know a lady whose girls (2) are elementary school age and she still has them sleeping with her and her husband. You may need to give the infant a little extra comfort; signing, patting on the back and, as a last resort picking up. Give the comfort necessary but then return the child to his or her bed shortly afterwards.

After a while you will notice, almost as if by accident, that your baby sleeps and baby naps at regular intervals effortlessly. Your household has returned to "normal" and everyone is getting a good nights sleep too. Watch for my article on the next hurdle - getting baby to sleep through the night.
