Discover The Right Dog Bed For Your Dog

Sep 14, 2008
Walking into any animal store, you're going to see many different choices of dog beds. Which one should you get? It can be hard to tell, and you don't want to spend all of that money just to get a bed your dog doesn't use. This guide lists several different things to take into account when you're purchasing a bed for your furry friend.

One of the primary considerations you must look at first is the size. Sometimes people buy a small dog bed for their puppy, but this could cause problems later on if it is a large breed. Larger dogs grow very quickly their first year, so you will calculate for that when considering a new sleeping area for your companion.

For adult dogs, you've got to get a bed that gives them the room to stretch out and be really comfortable. If they just barely fit in the bed, chances are your dog won't use it very much. Height is another size requirement. If your dog has short legs, it might not be able to get into a higher dog bed. Larger dogs, though, might enjoy the escape from drafts that higher beds can give them.

Something else you should take under advisement is the shape. Because there are such a variety of breeds, dog beds take on a wide spectrum of appearances and shapes. This includes ones that mimic human items like beds and couches, as well as traditional dog beds that sit on the floor and are circular, rectangular, or square. There are even special beds with raised sides for dogs that prefer to sleep with their head slightly elevated.

Think about how your dog usually sleeps. If he or she sleeps curled up in a circle, a round bed is probably a good fit. If your dog sleeps stretched out, you might want a longer bed. Here again you'll want to take into account your dog's age. If you still have a puppy, you'll want to account for growth.

Be sure to check the tag before you buy your dog's bed. You want to be sure that at least the main pad can be removed and washed. This is a necessity in dealing both with dirt and with keeping your dog's bed free of fleas. You also want the material to be heavy enough to withstand a little chewing and clawing, especially if the bed is for a puppy.

Durability is another thing to pay attention to. Some dog beds feature wooden supports or frames, and these beds may last longer than those that are completely made out of cloth. However, you want to make sure the padding in these beds is sufficient and that the wooden frame won't poke through or be uncomfortable.

Older dogs may require the purchase of a specialty bed, and there are even orthopedic dog beds which are intended to help ease the stiffening pain of arthritic joints. This is an investment you should consider carefully if your dog is suffering from old age or has an injury which renders it disabled in some way.

So many times people look to color or style when looking at dog beds, but this is only a small part of what makes a good choice. If the bed is going to be placed in a room where there is already an established color pattern you might pick something that matches what is already there.

This is not the end for the options that are available for dog beds; there are some that are heated or waterproof. Others can even be custom ordered with designs sewn into the cloth. Before you head out to make this purchase, write down every consideration you have for your furry friend's bed. This will help you narrow down the choices once you go to buy the bed.
