How to Determine Your Fertile Period

Sep 15, 2008
If you are trying to conceive, it is important that you know when you are most fertile. Every woman has a fertile period each month and this is the time you should make sure you have sexual intercourse. To determine when you are likely to be the most fertile, start counting the days from the first day of your menstrual period. The ovulation cycle usually starts 14 days after this and the period of fertility starts about 4 or 5 days before this.

Although every woman is not alike, it is safe to say that you will be fertile about 10 days after the first day of your menstrual and this continues until for one to two days after the second week. The fertility period lasts for almost three weeks, with the most fertile time occurring about the middle of this time period.

When you know the days when you are fertile, you can increase your chances of becoming pregnant. This is why it is important to keep track of when you start your period each month. It will also help you avoid an unwanted pregnancy, if you cannot cope with a baby at this time of your life but want to be sexually active.

There are over-the-counter ovulation kits that you can buy if you don't think you can rely on the 14-day method. This kit will enable you to measure your LH surge in the morning when you urinate. The dipstick that you place in the urine sample will tell you what your LH level is each morning. LH is the abbreviation for lutenizing hormone and this signals the ovary to start releasing an egg into the Fallopian tube.

Each of these kits has between five and seven strips allowing you to measure the levels for a week. The normal time frame for start using one of these strips to test for ovulation is on the 11th day following the end of your menstrual period. You shouldn drink large amounts of fluids before you test your fertility, which is why you should do it the first thing in the morning.

Another method of predicting your most fertile time of the month is by taking your basal temperature. During ovulation, the basal temperature of the body rises for a few days. You may want to test this out for a month and record the changes in your temperature because you are most fertile in the few days before your temperature starts to rise. When you experiment with this and keep a record, then you will have a pretty good idea of how many days after you finish your period that you would be most likely to get pregnant.

As soon as you know that you are entering your period of fertility, you should start having intercourse every day. This is good news for most men whose partners are trying to become pregnant. You should also make sure you maintain a healthy diet and get plenty of exercise so that your body will be ready for a new baby.
