Pregnancy Symptoms Are Not the Same For Every Woman

Sep 15, 2008
One of the most common pregnancy symptoms is a missed menstrual period. Quite often women don't even realize that they are pregnant until they miss their period and sometimes they are disappointed to find that they are not pregnant at all. It is important to be able to recognize the symptoms of pregnancy because there are times when these are not actually pregnancy signs, but signs that something else is happening in the body. It is common for women to have monthly periods while they are pregnant, though these periods will be lighter and shorter in duration than the regular menstrual period.

It is normal to have some slight bleeding in the first few days of the pregnancy, which most women dismiss as spotting from their last menstrual period. Others may become concerned about it and schedule a visit to the doctor. This bleeding is called implantation bleeding and occurs when the fetus attached itself to the wall of the uterus. However, many women do not experience this and are not aware that it is an early sign of pregnancy.

As early as a week or two after you become pregnant, you will start to notice a difference in your breasts. They will become swollen and sore to touch. Even wearing a bra may be uncomfortable and you may have to buy a larger size for increased comfort. You may also notice a change in the color of the areolas, which is the skin around your nipples. These become darker in color when you are pregnant. Another symptom that can start as early as the first week is a tired fatigued feeling. You may wonder why you are so tired each day and need to have more rest than normal. The slightest bit of activity may leave you feeling exhausted.

Once you start to feel sick when you wake in the morning, you can feel quite confident that there is a baby growing in your uterus. This can start as early as the second week, but for most women it starts in the fourth week. Some never experience this at all and some women have nausea in the mornings or at the sight and smell of certain foods all through their pregnancy. One of the best ways to combat the feelings of nausea is to eat dry crackers. There are also armbands and patches you can get at the pharmacy if you are really feeling sick. These are very similar to seasick medications and are perfectly safe for pregnant women to use.

Experiencing a dull ache in your lower back is a common sign of pregnancy too. This is because the fetus is putting pressure on the muscles and joints in your lower back, so you may need to sit down more frequently during the day. Because of the sudden increase in hormones in your body, headaches in early pregnancy are quite common. If you are not prone to headaches, you may be surprised to learn that this is the cause of you suddenly having these pains and discomfort.
