Tips for Choosing Bridesmaids

Sep 15, 2008
It's not just the bride but also the bridesmaids who make a wedding wonderful. So, the bridesmaids, who are the focus of a bride's side of a wedding party, must be chosen with care.

Conventions of Choosing Bridesmaid
Here are some tips for choosing bridesmaid who would ease the stress of a marriage ceremony from you:

Age and Relation
Bridesmaids should ideally be young marriageable women. However, there are exceptions to the rule. The main bridesmaid is called the maid-of-honor if she is unmarried or the matron of honor if she is married. Sometimes there are bridesmaids who are hardly of marriageable age and they are considered as honorary bridesmaid or junior bridesmaids. They should be a close friend or relative of the bride, preferably a sister.

Generally there should be more than one bridesmaid. Though now-a-days a bride decides how many bridesmaids she wants, traditionally the number depended on the bride's family's social and economic status. A large and grand group of bridesmaids was a way to flaunt one's wealth and status. In modern days a small wedding usually has 2-3 bridesmaids, a mid-sized one 3-4 of them and a large wedding includes at least 5 or more bridesmaids.

Practical Points
It is not just your favorite ones and the traditions that must be kept in mind while choosing bridesmaid, there are some practical tips that are also necessary. Your bridesmaids should be able to ease your burden during the hectic planning and organizing of a wedding. They should live close to you, so that they are available at short notice. Invite someone to be your bridesmaid well in advance in case she does not want to oblige. Keep some alternatives in mind in case one of your bridesmaids falls ill or backs off for some reason

Realistic details
You should be highly realistic and not emotional while choosing bridesmaid. You must remember that not every close friend or relative is ideally going to be your best bridesmaid. Moreover, do not make someone your bridesmaid just because you have been hers.

Budgeting you bridesmaids
Knowing how to budget you bridesmaids is also a practical necessity. Historically, a bride's family pays for the expenses of a bridesmaid and must also show their gratitude with gifts. But that is pass'. Today's brides prefer that bridesmaids are accommodating so far as expenses like the cost of their dresses, accessories, their food and travel costs etc.

Personality of bridesmaids
Your presentation of bridesmaids will make a huge difference to your wedding ceremony. While choosing bridesmaid every bride must keep in mind certain personality traits that are essential in a bridesmaid. Make sure your bridesmaids are people who are supportive and helpful. Ideally a bridesmaid should be cheerful and make you feel at ease when you get the wedding pangs. They should be confidant, active, ready to run around and help in the management of the wedding as well.

They should all be reliable and accommodating. For instance they should be ready to have a late lunch during the practice of the wedding day details.

Bonding Bridesmaid
Moreover, every bridesmaid must be comfortable with the other. Do not include conflicting personalities, for they can turn into a wedding spoiler. Your groom should also be compatible with your bridesmaids. Also, while choosing bridesmaid, do not include someone your groom or his family insists if you are not comfortable with their personality.

Duties of a bridesmaid
Though there are theories that suggest that a bridesmaid is under no obligation to take any responsibilities there are some that are customarily accepted. Bridesmaids should escort and attend to the bride during or after a wedding. In Europe and North America bridesmaids must help in planning the wedding reception. They must take part in events such as a bridal shower or bachelorette party. A junior bridesmaid generally has no responsibilities other than escorting the bride at the wedding.

Choose with cheer
To round off, choosing bridesmaid does involve some brainstorming, but it's not that tough either. Add some fun while choosing bridesmaid to make it an enjoyable affair for you and your special companions. Organize surprise parties, send "thank you" cards on mail when a bridesmaid has done a good job, send in goodies to their homes if you can afford etc. This will surely add a lot of cheer to the bridesmaid choosing process.
