Outrank The Competition Via Offpage Website Optimization

Sep 15, 2008
If you have completed your onpage optimization of you website, then you will be ready to move forward and begin the offpage stage of your SEO. Offpage optimization is the process of selecting and establishing links with other web pages, and there are a few key factors that you need to consider when you undertake the linking process.

Firstly, you will want to find suitable sites with which to establish links. Whilst establishing a large number of links boosts the search engine crawlers chances of finding you, the sites that they come to you from can give your search engine ranking more weight. In other words, links from high ranking, high quality sites will get you further up the search rankings than links from poor quality, low ranked sites or sites with unrelated content. You should also consider how the site is viewed by search engines, is the site an authority in their eyes. When a site that is deemed an authority links with yours, this benefits you, as your link to a highly ranked site will push up your search engine ranking. Consider the number of pages from which you have links to your site after these other factors, because a few less links, but from authority sites will be of more benefit than lots of links from low ranked, unrelated sites.

Next consider how the sites that you are connected to are linking with you. The key to establishing this is to consider what anchor text is used for your link. What is anchor text? Put simply, this is the word or phrase to which the hyperlink to your site is attached. It can be a bonus if the links come via this anchor text and not simply a direct link to your site.

A further factor that you will want to optimize and explore is link popularity. Establishing link popularity means identifying the backward paths of links that arrive at your site. There are tools that can help with this, or you can work it out using Google. Basically what you want to figure out is how many links are coming to the website that you are linked to. You then want to look at the kinds of links these are, by considering where they come from and what type of sites they originate at.

As you proceed with off-page optimization, you may also wish to look at the number of outbound links exist on the web pages that are linking you. These outbound links are just what they sound like, links from a web page or pages to other external, outbound sites. Basically what you are looking to identify here is if there are a large number of links, or only a small number of links. If there are fewer links outbound from a page that goes to your site, then this gives more weight to a link from there to your web page.

Lastly, you should look at the page titles of the sites that links are originating from. This is important as you may wish to contact the person running the site to negotiate reciprocal links. This is a fairly straightforward process, and as a general rule people are open to this as they understand the benefit of quality links. The other reason that the page titles are important is that page titles with your keywords in the title will again give more strength to your site and aid in boosting you page ranking.

Offpage optimization is crucial to the success of your site and the optimization of your position in the search engine rankings. Developing quality links will play an important part in moving your site up the ranks in the search engines and seeing your page move up rapidly in the search engine ranks will be your just reward for taking the time to get it right.
