Sep 16, 2008
Though not as commonly as women, men also experience yeast infections. Yeast infection, or overgrowth of yeast is seen most frequently on the male genitals, skin and in the mouth. The oral yeast infection is called thrush.

Yeast infections can be passed back and forth between partners so women need to be aware of male yeast infection symptoms. Also male yeast infection symptoms closely resemble genital herpes and other sexually transmitted diseases.

Symptoms of Male Yeast Infection

Itching, irritation, and soreness are the most common symptoms of male yeast infection. Redness and small white blisters are also report by some having male yeast infection.

Sometimes men complain of burning when urinating. Very rarely will those with male yeast infection have the white discharge seen in female yeast infections.

What Are The Reasons For Male Yeast Infection?

Partner to partner transfer through sexual intercourse

Following Antibiotic Use

Diabetes Complication

Direct contact is one-way partners can give each other yeast infections. The word infection is not 100% correct since yeast is a normal part of most women's bodies. The problem arises when there is an overgrowth of yeast leading to what we call a yeast infection.

Yeast infections are more common in women. But male yeast infections do occur. When men get a yeast infection they need to look at their overall health to determine what conditions could cause their male yeast infection. Diabetes, diet, antibiotics are all things which increase the chance of male yeast infection.

But if the male's partner is experiencing a yeast infection, the man is exposed to more yeast organisms than usual. So if the partner has an active yeast infection it is safer to avoid sexual relations until the yeast condition is eliminated. This minimizes the partner's soreness and additional irritation and also the possibility of passing the yeast infection back and forth.

Antibiotics use is another way for yeast to overgrow causing male yeast infection. Antibiotics kill not only infection bacteria but also bacteria which helps protect the body. When this happens the yeast have a chance to overgrow since there is less competition.

Diabetes seems to increase the number of male yeast infections. A possibility reason for this is the increased sugar levels in the body.

To protect their health and that of their partners, men need to know the symptoms of male yeast infection. Knowledge can decrease the changes for partners passing the yeast infection back and forth to each other. Also know the symptoms as they are similar to sexually transmitted diseased like genital herpes and others.
