What You Need to Know About Tattoo Removal

Sep 16, 2008
Remember that night last year when you got drunk, and got your boyfriend's name tattooed on your hip as a sign of your love and eternal commitment? Well, he just called and left a message on your answering machine: the relationship's over. Now you've got his name prominently displayed whenever you take your clothes off. You're not alone: there are many other reasons people get tattoos removed, from simply outgrowing a design to a change in lifestyle. In the past, you would have had to deal with these unfortunate circumstances forever, or undergo an extremely painful procedure such as dermabrasion or excision. These procedures would also leave a scar on the body that was potentially more unsightly than what it replaced. With new laser technology, however, you can have that unwanted eyesore of a tattoo taken off your body. While the price tag usually is fairly steep, that peace of mind might just be worth it. Consider that approximately 10% of the United States population has a tattoo, and approximately 50% of those people will one day regret their decision-that means tattoo removal is big business, especially as the procedure becomes more and more common.

Laser tattoo removal certainly doesn't come cheap. In fact, it's usually much more expensive to have a tattoo taken off than it is to have one put on! The price tag can run more than a thousand dollars for large designs that require a number of visits to the office. After all, the only people certified to use the lasers to remove tattoos are medical doctors, and they value their time quite highly. The one exception is former gang members looking to escape that rough and tumble lifestyle. Many doctors, civic groups, and hospitals offer free gang-related tattoo removal.

Before you put the money down on the counter, it's also important to realize that tattoo removal is very rarely 100% effective. That means that there will be some remnant of your tattoo left on your body even after the procedure is complete. Black and darker colored tattoos tend to react better towards laser treatment.

So how does the process actually work? The high-tech lasers in your doctor's office produce short pulses of extremely intense light. This light passes through the top layer of skin as it is absorbed by the pigment of your tattoo. The tattoo is broken into tiny particles that are then absorbed by the body's immune system. Certain wavelengths of light have the most positive effect on the tattoo pigment, so those are used exclusively to avoid damage to the skin's pigment. Typically, this process takes at least couple of visits to a doctor's office, though in special cases many more visits could be required.

Now that there is an easier procedure to eliminate unwanted tattoos from the body, removal is becoming more and more common. That means you don't have to live with a poor choice made years ago. If you're unhappy with the way your tattoo looks, check into getting it removed today by a qualified dermatologist.
