Havanese Require Attention

Sep 16, 2008
Most new pets entering the household can pose some challenges as they begin to fit into the family lifestyle and Havanese training can be both a blessing and a challenge. These little dogs tend to have their own ideas about fun and initially would prefer playing and cavorting than spend time learning to perform new tricks. However, as the Havanese pup begins to be rewarded for simply following directions, they will be more willing to learn new behaviors.

The Havanese prefers the company of its new family and is willing to work to get everyone's attention. The humans in the house may not appreciate some of their methods, but as the animal receives positive reinforcement for following directions, they will soon get used to the new actions and want to please their owners. It is this desire to please that may also make them be a little destructive if left alone too long. It is not that they are punishing the owners they are just bored and need something to keep them occupied.

When the new Havanese puppy first walks into a new home its first impulse will be to establish itself as king of the new castle. Unless the owner is there to explain otherwise, the new puppy could end up causing a lot of grief. However, with proper Havanese training methods, the new dog will quickly understand its place in the home's order and willing accept its role as a faithful companion and entertainer.

Positive reinforcement is the best method of training these toy dogs as they are willing to please their owners. When the owner reacts positively with praise, the animal is more likely to respond willingly to the commands. The Havanese is a smart breed and they can quickly detect the words as well as the tone in their owner's voice. Most veterinarians do not recommend dog treats for rewards as they can be overused, causing the animal to gain weight.

The Havanese breed may be small but they can keep a family on its toes trying to keep up with them. They can be loyal to a fault and are willing to learn new behaviors and entertain the entire family, but they do expect the family's time in return.

However, Havanese training can be challenging as they also demand a lot of attention and time from their owners and seem to have a constant need to be the center of attention.

Of all the Havanese problems new owners are likely to find is they can be destructive if they do not feel they are getting enough attention from the family. They can be demanding of the family's time and, until they know their place and proper role, will do whatever they think of to make themselves the center of attention.

It takes time and patience to train a young Havanese but the effort is worth it once the animal begins to display their affection for all members in the household.
