Home Security Improvement Options

Sep 16, 2008
Owning a home is the American Dream. Like all dreams, there can be a contrasting element that can stress you out. In the case of homeownership, it is getting robbed. This is why many homeowners add security systems to their homes.

Many people mistakenly assume a home security system is an absolute buffer against crime. It is a smart move, but that does not mean you can drop your guard. Leaving your alarm off or windows open is going to result in problems.

Home security is like a car. You have lots of choices. You can buy a little Toyota that will run forever, but is pretty basic, or you can buy a Ferrari. As with a car, the choice really boils down to what you want to spend.

The simplest of home security systems is the time tested one of having a big dog. A big dog barking is a great way to make burglars think twice. Make sure to post beware of dog warning signs. In fact, post them even if you do not have a dog. Thieves will not know.

After the pup prevention system, we have the alarm system that is not an alarm system. Instead, it simply appears to be. You can buy fake cameras and place them in easy to see areas. The idea is to trick the thieves.

The unmonitored home security system is a very common choice among homeowners these days. Noise is the key. When armed, any tripping of the alarm sensors results in a blaring noise that will wake the neighborhood and scare off the thief.

Jumping up a level in security, we have the monitored system. When an alarm is tripped, it blares noise and calls the security system you are signed up with. They call and verify if there is a problem. If you say yes or they cannot reach you, they call the police.

Going with the monitored option seems obvious at first glance, but it is expensive and has a weakness. If a thief really wants in, they will just cut the phone lines. No phone lines means no calls to the security company, so be careful.

Security systems do not top off at monitored versions. There are much more secure platforms, but they are very pricey and complex. If infrared sensoring, pressure pads under carpets and so on sound good, they are available for a pretty penny.

Choosing a security system for your home can be frustrating. Determine what you are willing to pay, the level of crime in your area and what you can afford. Now pick the system that best matches your needs.
