Teaching Your Children Manners - 6 Things You May Not Know

Sep 17, 2008
Teaching your children manners can be accomplished when it is done consistently. As parents we all want our children to be well mannered. I know as a father I enjoy compliments from other adults about my children's behavior. Like you I am sometimes surprised when these compliments come. Here are some guidelines for teaching manners to your children.

1. Do not try too fast. If you are trying to teach your 2 year old to chew with their mouth closed you may not get very far. Think about the tremendous coordination it takes to do this. When your child is 5 or 6 though, they are ready.

2. Always, always set a good example. Take something like picking your nose. This may seem blunt but have you ever caught yourself doing the very thing you are trying to teach your child not to do? I know I have. 95% of what we do we learn through example.

3. Speak respectfully to your child. Have you ever observed a parent trying to drill respect into a child by being demeaning to that child? Your children learn by watching you. Try using words and phrases like "please" and "thank you" "Excuse me" and "I am sorry." Do this as early as possible in your child's development. Also the tone you use is just as important.

4. What language do you use? It is commonly understood that swearing is a sign of poor education and upbringing. I hope this does not offend you so I will just say "Speak like you want your children to speak."

5. Formality with adults. Impertinent children speak informally to adults. At least this was the case 100 years ago. Teach your children to say Mr. and Mrs. and Ms. unless the adult tells them otherwise. Also mind how you speak about other adults in the presence of your children.

6. Questioning bad behavior? When an adult comes to you and reports something your child has done never take your child's side with the adult present. Instead turn to your child and say "Mr. Smith says you broke his window with your baseball. Why did you do that?" Your child may very well try to deny it at this point but you will immediately undermine all respect your child has for adults if you immediately take your child's side. I know this may sound unreasonable but just think about it. Do you know Mr. Smith to be a liar? Does Mr. Smith dislike your child? I realize sometimes this is the case but 99% of the time it is not.

The fact is that Mr. Smith has a broken window. Get on Mr. Smith's team and help your child do the same and solve the mystery. If it turns out to be your child use this as a learning experience and ask Mr. Smith how you and your child can make him whole.

Teaching your children manners can be accomplished by setting the example first. Teach your children to be more formal with adults which will lead to respect. Remember you are an adult and if you teach your children good manners they will naturally have more respect for you.
