Good Video Games For Brain Development

Sep 17, 2008
Studies have shown that some games, mostly the action packed ones, only stimulate the part of the brain that involves vision and movement. Video games that are considered tools for learning are found to use up and coordinate the areas of the brain associated with memory, emotion, learning and impulse control found in the left and right sides of the frontal lobes. The question now is, how do you pick out the good games for the brain development of your kid?

The market has grown increasingly bombarded with different video games that overflow with action that some may be too graphic for kids. Since kids cannot choose games for themselves and would only rely on the hearsays and reviews of more mature age groups, it is expedient that the responsibility in choosing the games should fall upon the parents.

Good thing about the manufactured games nowadays is that there is a content rating and age limit in the boxes of the video games. Be sure to look for them and from there, you can limit the choices you would allow your kids to play. Asking the sales representative at the store is not a bad idea at all. Get advice on the latest games that are targeted for your kid's age then ask if there are any others which are good video games for brain development.

There are several ones released that included maths simple additions to be performed in a given time frame. Games of adventure that involve simple tasks such as identifying an object or a color can stimulate the thinking part of the brain as well. The studies that have been conducted on kids regularly playing with action video games versus those that play these educational ones show a difference in attitude. Although the game in itself may not be violent, constant exposure to those that use only one side of the brain can cause an imbalance to the attitude and characteristics of a child.

Review of different video games can be found on the internet. Research those that are listed by experts and have shown positive effects on the children. Make a mental note, or list them if you may, of these recommended items and present them to your kid before purchase. Be sure not to include mature game content among their options. Choose ones that have lively color yet contains a learning theme. Afterwards, observe your child if the mental capacity has improved or if the game has shown negative effects. If the case is the latter, better change the game again.

Good video games for brain development must be properly filtered by a parent. Also remember to balance the electronic entertainment from a physical game outside. An exercise for the brain is good, but it is even better if there will be an exercise for the body too. Regulate the playing time and keep track of your kid's progress, this is the formative stage afterall. Keeping your kid well rounded can help him or her turn out to be a model adult.
