Hats And Scarves Are Not Just For Winter!

Why do we wear scarves and hats? To keep us warm? Well, sometimes we do, but there is so much more to these accessories than warmth!

A winter scarf can come in a variety of styles and designs and materials, mainly wool, wool blends, and synthetics. A cashmere scarf will be a wonderfully soft and warm item. A wool scarf will be lovely and warm, whereas the synthetic scarves are also lovely, warm, and soft, but without the cashmere price tag. A hand knitted scarf is touching and special as it means something - either it is something you have achieved yourself or someone likes you enough to take the time to make it for you. But wearing a scarf for warmth is only part of the scarf story! A lightweight scarf worn loosely around the neck is a great way to change an outfit, making it reflect your personality and adding color. Lightweight scarves used to be mainly silk which made them expensive and a preserve of the wealthy, but as new materials have been invented, lightweight scarves have become available to everyone. Nowadays scarves are still sometimes made of silk, but they could also be made of cotton, linen, satin or jersey. They come in fantastic designs, with pictures, colors and elaborate patterns. Scarves can be worn over the hair in a 1940's style, over the shoulders like a shawl, around the neck in a classic scarf style, loosely looped around the neck, around the head in a ribbon like a hairband or even added as a belt.

Wool hats are a wonderful way of brightening up the dull winter! They are available with or without pom-poms and in a massive range of colors. Hats with animal ears or eyes look fun and playful, and some even have tails! A knitted hat in one color with a little peak is still warm but has a smart look. A plain wool hat can be made more decorative with buttons, crocheted flowers, ribbons and fur trims. But, like scarves, keeping warm is only one reason for wearing a hat. We wear hats in the summer to keep cool. Wide brimmed straw hats are great for keeping the sun off the face and the back of the neck. They can be decorated with flowers, ribbons, and lightweight scarves. A baseball cap protects the eyes from the sun but has a more practical and slightly masculine appearance, where a wide brimmed straw hat looks very feminine and quite classic. But looking at a hat as a practical item misses part of its appeal. A hat can be worn because of the way it alters an outfit. A fascinator adds interest and flair to a dress, a felt hat gives a vintage feel and can be worn just as well with a smart dress or a pair of jeans. A little crocheted hat adds a cute, unique appearance to an outfit.
Hats and scarves are wonderful accessories that have practical and decorative uses and they are essential for every wardrobe!
