The doors have closed to the 2017 Mountain West Annual Meeting & Convention in Scottsdale, Arizona. The annual event held April 12-14, 2017 at the Fairmont Scottsdale Princess was the largest gathering of credit union professionals from Arizona, Colorado and Wyoming. Attendees had the opportunity to gain a wealth of knowledge from business strategists and credit union experts on the hottest issues in the credit union movement.

Now, as the attendees head back and throw open the doors of their credit unions, armed with new strategies to propel their credit unions forward, we want to take the opportunity to re-cap some of the events at this year's convention.

Key Speakers from Mountain West Annual Meeting & Convention 2017
Jill Morgenthaler, Ret. Colonel, U.S. Army, was one of 3 keynote speakers. Her address, titled "From the Battlefield to the Boardroom and in Between," covered why some people roar ahead in their careers while others stagnate. She explained ways to move forward, while eliminating unconscious mistakes that could be holding you back. It was a rousing and informative message, which inspired all in attendance.

Second up was John Best, CEO, Best Innovation Group who presented "Future Strategies for CUs that Want to Live in the New Digital World." He discussed the differences between a technology credit union that delivers financial services and a financial services credit union that delivers via technology. While the differences were subtle, they are important to the future of your credit union.

Closing out the convention was the last keynote speaker, Alex Sheen of "Because I Said I Would." He founded a nonprofit dedicated to the betterment of humanity through promises made and kept. "Because I Said I Would" adheres to seven important principles: compassion, self-control, sacrifice, honesty, hope, contemplation, and accountability. His inspiring address was directly followed by Mountain West's CU4Kids Award ceremony in special recognition of credit unions' work towards Children's Miracle Network of Hospitals.

In-between the keynote speakers were breakout sessions, covering: Being a Courageous Leader in a Cooperative World; Beyond Disruption; Board Compensation - Requirements, Best Practices & Pitfalls for Compensation Programs; Countering Cybercrime - Addressing Fraud, Countering Breaches & Maintaining Transaction Integrity; How to Stay Relevant In A Competitive Lending Space; Mergers & Acquisitions in the New Financial World; Reason, Season, Lifetime - Innovate to Increase Share of Wallet & Beat FinTech; and The Latest View from Washington.

A highlight of the breakout sessions was Using Performance Excellence to Transform your Credit Union, which featured an amazing panel of experts, including national and state-wide Baldrige award winners: Pete Reicks, SVP, Enterprise Performance Excellence at Elevations Credit Union; Chuck Valenti, CEO & President, Del Norte Credit Union; and Dr. Jeff Weinrach, Vice President, Enterprise Performance Excellence at Kirtland Federal Credit Union. This session featured some of the best minds in the movement, and revealed how they secured their market position, developed the quality systems they needed to remain competitive, and leveraged process improvement to ensure sustainability.
