3 Things to Keep in Mind When Walking Two or More Dogs

May 18, 2017
It takes a bit of time to get used to caring for your first pet. But once you are familiar with training, feeding, and playing with your pooch, you will likely start looking at other puppies for sale in Orange County for double the fun. But soon, you will begin to walk two dogs at the same time, which can become quite taxing, especially if one or both dogs constantly pull on the leash.

Most dog owners and handlers prefer to use the multiple dog leash design for walking two or more dogs. This design features a single handle with two or more leashes so you only use one hand to control the puppies. Multiple dog leashes are quite useful and effective for owners with two or more well-trained dogs that don't pull or jump around.

That said, there are a few things that you should keep in mind before buying a multiple dog leash:

1. Limited space between the dogs
Typical dog leash couplers allow for between one and two feet of space between dogs on a multiple leash. This spacing can feel too tight for most hyper puppies and cause anxiety for walking too close to another dog, even if they have been socialized or live together. Moreover, there is increased risk of redirected aggression when the dogs encounter something exciting or scary, which can be hard to control with a single leash handle.

2. Couplers can be uncomfortable for your pet
Dogs generally don't grow at the same rate, plus you may have puppies of different ages and breeds. Combining the difference in size with the limited wiggle space for each dog, and it's clear that your pets will experience a lot of discomfort for the entire duration of the walk.

The smaller dog will have to make multiple steps to keep up with a larger dog with long strides, which can be very exhausting especially on long walks. The difference in height will also cause the smaller dog to tug on the other dog's collar, making him even more uncomfortable.

3. Limited control
It is virtually impossible to maintain control when you have two or more dogs on a coupler pulling, even when using one leash. It will be very difficult to keep your dogs from pulling you, and possibly dangerous. Although the design should ideally give you control over well trained dogs, anything that excites the dogs and causes them to pull in different directions can be very hard to control.

So what should you use to walk two or more dogs?
When looking at adopting two or more puppies for sale in Orange County, you will need to buy a leash for each of your dogs. The leash will come in handy when training and controlling your dogs, and also when walking them. A multiple leash is not necessarily bad for well trained dogs as it eliminates the problem of fumbling and untangling two leashes. Ultimately, your choice will depend on your dog's temperament and how disciplined he/she is.
