Why and How I got into Massage

My introduction into massage, was when I was in my twenties. It was also the same time I got introduced to the rave scene. I got into house music, festivals, and long debates about how the real world powers are trying to destroy the world. This all had a profound affect on my life, and way of thinking. To be honest, not all of it was positive.

For example, at this period, I was surrounded by a lot of people talking about freeing the world. But very few of them were doing anything to change, or take control of their own lives. Small things like; earn money, or get further education. Looking back, this negative energy had an insidious affect on my own life. Thankfully, I saw this later on. I would still visit these friends, but less often. I would go to the parties, but only occasionally. Getting into conversation with others at the parties, I noticed that a lot of them were lost. They had no direction. They didn't know what they wanted to do with their lives. In between the drugs and raves, they were depressed, without knowing why.

For myself, fortunately, I did have a purpose. This scene introduced me to something amazing. Massage. At the end of a party we would congregate at someone's house and chill out and wind down. This involved copious amounts of smoking, tea, debating and getting a massage. Neither had I ever received a massage before, neither had I given one. I knew one thing I was hooked.

I would go to festivals or parties, have a dance. But more and more often, I would hunt down the resident massage table. I would get at least one massage. Sometimes two or three. These were a big part of my social life. My social life was about unwinding, and getting ready for the working week ahead. So chasing massages made perfect sense. Friends would and did offer plenty of free sessions. But I couldn't completely relax. I felt like I was cheating them. Also, the quality wasn't quite up to scratch. A professional in their field will always put in more energy into their work. Friends would be tired themselves, or just half heartedly putting in the effort.

I have been to festivals around the world. And If I do go now, it is still the massage table I look for. For me this part of the rave scene was the most genuine. When my friends would talk about conspiracy theories and drugs giving good vibrations, the massage were truly healing. I didn't tell anyone that I wanted to take massage as a new direction in my life. All I did was contact a friend of mine who was doing massage as a part time income.

I wanted to make people feel as good as I did when getting a massage. I wanted to transfer those good vibrations. What she introduced me to, totally blew my mind. Gone were vague notions of 'Good Vibrations'. I didn't know that there were different schools of massage. Her speciality was shiatsu massage. She taught me about the anatomy of the body. She also told me about the very real benefits of receiving a shiatsu massage. I realised for the first time that I could heal people on a very real, practical, and fundamental level. That time of my life, I spent learning and giving sessions with my friend, became the most empowering era of my life. My friend/ tutor showed me that change people lives for the better.

I have since learnt many forms of therapy. All of them first hand, through experienced therapists, on a one to one level. Ironically, learning to heal others has ended up healing myself. Maybe it's a cliché, but it's true. Earlier when I was telling you about the rave scene in my twenties, it did make me cringe slightly. All that talk about freeing the world, and good vibes. Turned out to be my calling after all. Only in a lot more mature and practical level. A client phoned me last week. He called to say thanks. Because, I was able to stop the pain in his knees. He found it a lot easier to get his work done. He felt better than he had in years. It gave him a piece of mind that he hadn't realised he'd been robbed of. He needs an operation in one of his knees. Now his confidence in the operation increased, he planned on seeing the doctor a lot sooner. The knee that he has had the operation on already, now feels fantastic.

Please note, if you are seeing a doctor about a condition, let them know that you intend to have a massage. Also do not use massage as a replacement for your Doctors medical advise.
