Some Interesting Destination Wedding Themes

By Rudy Van Lancker

Aside from wishing to be married in one's family homeland or dreaming of a dual wedding and exotic vacation, there are many other interesting ways for couples to be married. Nowadays there is no specific etiquette on what a bride or groom might plan, although the staunch traditionalists would disagree. With schedules stretching to harried lengths and couples trying to break out of the ho-hum of daily life, something dramatic is most likely in order. Thus, a destination theme wedding is the perfect answer.

A destination theme wedding is not necessarily about the destination but rather the event itself. For example, when we think of a safari wedding, our minds automatically travel to Africa. Hot and exotic takes us to Fuji. But when choosing a destination theme wedding, the location is not the key but rather the special event that will occur. The location is only important as the place to where the couple and their guests travel.

Watching news reports and seeing other unusual ideas, it is easy to find unique themes for a destination wedding. The original, old standby in Las Vegas with celebrity impersonators still flourishes but that is so common, today's happy couple strives for more excitement. What about a ride in a hot air balloon? That certainly has been done and can provide enjoyment to the couple and guests.

Another romantic gesture is to return to the location where the couple met. A recently published story announced that an older bride and groom would marry on the roller coaster on which they met some thirty years ago. Finally finding each other after all these years, they felt that creating their first moment all over again was most special. And what fun the ride would be for friends and family!

Being one with nature seems to be a huge draw for brides and grooms. Standing on a mountaintop almost touching the sky seems heavenly enough that the couple must be blessed forever. Frolicking with the fish and dolphins underwater is another calm and serene way in which to hold a destination themed wedding. Even a quaint ceremony beside a still brook can make a lasting memory. Looking for peace and harmony, a couple may choose a non-denominational setting but still seek spirituality such as in an ashram.

Bungee jumping, hayrides, sky diving, and white water rafting have all been used for destination wedding themes. Couples have married in white outfits, black garb and even in the nude. They use traditional vows, write their own words and employ poets to write personalized vows. And all of this is done with some sort of destination wedding theme.

Afterall, destination weddings are only weddings that are not in your place of residence. Destination does not always mean thousands of miles away. And destination weddings can be as traditional as conventional history expects or as bizarre as the couple can imagine. The only thing that is important is that the couple choose a destination or theme that has significance in their lives and will forever be engrained in their memories.
