Steps You Should Take If You Fail In A School Test Or Examination

By Dr Marc R. Dussault

Everyone's had the unfortunate experience of studying endlessly for a test and yet still failing thanks to sheer anxiousness or some other outside problem.

Maybe you're dreaming of becoming a respected academic, but history and human nature dictate that you will still make mistakes on your way to that dream. You need to accept that you are imperfect, and take advantage of those mistakes instead of letting them get you down.

Failure is an important part of human development. It is in times of failure, rather than in successful times, that we study are mistakes. As a result, we are able to discover our downfalls and move forward and closer to reaching our goals.

How many times does a baby try to walk before it gives up? The answer is as many times as it takes. Yet we as adolescents and adults often give up after only a few attempts. Don't do this to yourself. When faced with an unfavourable result, learn from it. Success comes from good judgment. Good judgment comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgment. So there you go - you're on your way to success!

The more time you spend berating yourself, the lower your self-esteem sinks, and the less motivated you feel to work to solve the problem; beating yourself up creates a vicious cycle that fixes nothing. The solution is to remember that you should be disappointed in yourself not for failure, but for letting failure convince you to give in.

No one will be drowned if they fall down in a puddle of water face down, unless they remained in that position; this is the mental make up you need to carry within yourself.

If you subscribe to the mindset that what is initially deemed as "failure" can actually lead to bigger and better successes in the future, you will find yourself motivated at times when all seems to be lost. For example, if you bomb an exam you spent weeks studying for, you should remind yourself that even though the results were not what you expected, you tried your best, and learned from the experience.

This way you never fail or truly bomb, because you're in a space that allows you to win, even if you don't have the results you desire. So create mental rules that ensure you always win. These rules will then regulate your path to success in whatever you do.

When you feel especially vulnerable, you're also more likely to feel as though you don't measure up to others, as though your inadequacies loom large in comparison to your peers. But I can assure you that although others may sometimes count your areas of weakness as their areas of strength, you shouldn't infer that you're in any way inferior. On the contrary; you have your own unique set of strengths which cannot be duplicated. The only comparisons that are necessary to make are with your own personal best.

If you are absolutely committed to a goal, you will find a way to make it happen. Think of a recent accomplishment you've had that you worked hard to achieve. Was there any doubt that you'd get what you wanted? Is it not true, if you are really honest with yourself, that when you have come up short in the past it's in part, because you really didn't give it your all?

You have to understand that miracles are only reflective of the amount of time and energy that you spend to acheive them. If your looking for someone to help you, but you lack the drive to help yourself, then you can expect that no miracles will ever come your way. Sometimes, even the most hard working people in the world can't catch a break, but for them, that is where persistance and determination come in, and that is what defines real success. Like diamonds which have been formed from highly condensed carbon, true character and desired results come only from the way in which we strive to succeed under pressure. If you work hard at something for long enough, you will find that there are no miracles- only the reward of seeing the results that you were looking for.
