Three Tools to Banish the Deer From Your Property

Jun 18, 2017
For many gardeners who live in rural or semi-wooded areas, the deer population can be a nuisance at best, if not a never-ending source of aggravation. The damage that deer can cause to a well-manicured garden can not only infuriate the steward due to seemingly wasted effort, but also may prove costly for gardeners who grow their own produce. The battle is usually ongoing and seemingly futile.

What is the exasperated green-thumbed homeowner to do? Many of the smaller plant guards tend to be on the flimsier side, unable to hold up to a mammal that typically outweighs the average human being. Not only is standing guard and launching a defensive attack against deer completely impractical, it may also draw the ire of the local regulatory body in charge of hunting and wildlife.

A fence seems a logical solution to this problem. One small issue is that ingress and egress from the enclosed area may be difficult, especially if the fence extends to your driveway. Luckily, garden fence gates address this need. Your hard work is protected from large intruders while you can still access your garden.

Guard Types

Three major barriers are available to ward off deer. One such barricade is a deer crossing guard. This heavy-duty slotted steel device typically measures 12-14 feet across and 14-16 feet wide, and usually can cover a ditch or hole in the ground. Cars can easily traverse this; however, deer will not follow, as their hooves may fall into the steel grates. This method may be ideal for gardeners who have a ditch that deer usually congregate around.

For homeowners who would like to protect their gardens with a fence, two types of entries are available. Regardless of style, the fence itself will generally be high enough that deer will not be able to jump the fence. For most homeowners, a standard gate will be sufficient. This will allow the homeowners access to their garden, and could be mounted in many different positions. If their needs require them to get either a vehicle or heavy equipment through the fence, a driveway gate is also available to provide the extra clearance necessary to get the car through.

Regardless of which garden fencing gate or deer crossing guard is selected, the desired area should be fenced off properly. A strong metal fence is generally preferable, as a deer is less likely to be able to inflict sufficient damage to gain entry. Also, the fence should be high enough that a deer will not be able to jump over the fence. After all, what good does a fence do if it cannot stop deer from entering the area? Generally, the fence itself should be taller than a typical adult human being to keep deer from successfully jumping it.

Keeping Wildlife Away

While it may be impossible to keep all wildlife away, fencing options could help to at least minimize the potential impact. Garden fence gates can help in addition to any sturdy fence to prevent the forest's many creatures from wreaking havoc on your carefully cultivated garden. There are many options to suit most aesthetic and geographical needs. The deer population should not have free reign of your harvest.
