Aug 12, 2017
Injuries can happen anytime and it is important enough to understand the right ways to handle it. Sometimes, it is your carelessness that lets you face an injury while in other scenarios you aren't even responsible for what happened. A wrong move made by somebody else can bring you potential troubles and liabilities. The injuries caused on the outside of your body are mostly treatable but what about the injuries that are caused internally? The human body is as delicate as you could imagine and even the slight chance of internal injury can be fatal enough.

What is IVC Filter Injury?

The number of IVC Filter Injury Cases is seemingly increasing each year yet there is so less awareness about those. IVC Filters are implanted in an individual's body when a blood clot condition called embolism happens, however, the anticoagulants or blood thinner is provided as a treatment but they may not work well for everybody. In certain cases, IVC filter transplant becomes the only solution to recover from the condition. IVC or Inferior Vena Cava Filters are implanted in the largest vein of the human body and is connected from the right atrium of the heart to the lungs.

IVC filter is designed to capture the blood clot that has broken loose from one of the deep veins in the legs. Failing to which could lead to blockage of the pulmonary artery leading to breathing difficulty, chest pain, stroke, and even death. This filter is designed to trap the blood clot for a while allowing the rest of the blood to pass through. Over the time, anticoagulants help break down the clot eliminating the condition of blockage.

What Is The History Of IVC Filter Injury?

IVC Filters have been used since later 70s but in a much scarcely manner than now. In the late 1970s, there were only 2,000 IVC transplants as reported by the FDA. Over the years, the number exponentially raised to 167,000 a year by 2007 and 250,000 a year by 2012.

This drastic increase in transplants somehow triggered the number of reported IVC failures in one way or the other. The court cases started piling up and as the awareness built about this medical condition, more and more people cases came forward. The IVC filter fails brought out some of the worst medical circumstances to the patients.

The matter became even more complicated when multidistrict litigation began in 2014 with the Cook filters and 2015 with the Bard filters. Cook and Brad filter transplants were reportedly causing severe injuries and fatalities.
