Saunas Exposed! Different Types, Benefits And Disadvantages

Aug 17, 2007
Whether you call it a sweathouse or steambath, you may find a wide-range of health benefits from the use of a sauna, which provides therapy through both wet and dry heat sessions of treatment. The history of the first saunas can be traced back to the creation of the Finnish variety, which is still being used as a blueprint for the construction and use of some of the saunas of today. Through this relaxing process, a wide-range of results can be achieved, which may be shared within a social circle or used as a form of mental and physical solitary meditation.

Different Kinds of Saunas

Saunas are often installed in luxury spas and resorts, as well as fitness and health clubs as a way to unwind. From smoke saunas to deep rock selections, the sauna allows muscles to relax, which comes in handy after a vigorous game of racquetball. They are also used as a form of non-physical exercise as it promotes increased circulation throughout the body. Depending on the type of sauna you encounter, there are various advantages associated with the use of a sauna session.

When it comes to the type of saunas to choose from, there are about three main selections to keep in mind. There are the traditional kinds of saunas that involve a small room or sectioned off area. Within the room, a heater is placed inside, which may work by electricity, gas or wood. Sometimes the room is heated through the process of keeping rocks hot. The next type of sauna is called a far infrared sauna, which uses ceramics or metal to produce heat through the emission of far infrared energy. Lastly, there are infrared lamp saunas, which utilize incandescent infrared heat lamps to produce the heat needed to operate a sauna. When choosing this option, you may be able to reap the benefits of color therapy from various kinds of light, which can treat some of the organs in the body.

Health Benefits of Using a Sauna

For some, the use of the sauna far exceeds the physical benefits that this practice offers. There is something rather spiritual about encountering the soothing properties of the heat. Not only does the body relax, but also the mind, which is often used to clear ones thoughts and reach higher levels of spirituality. This procedure is rather prevalent among Native American, Japanese and Finnish cultures. Below you will find a laundry list of health benefits that have been connected to the use of saunas.

Skin Rejuvenation: While the sauna slowly eliminates unwanted chemicals and toxins from the body, the skin become refreshed, as well as rejuvenated.

Helps Out the Kidneys and Liver: The elimination of these unwanted substances in the body is enhanced through the response of the body to the heat, which is accomplished through sweating. This part of the sauna treatment helps to take some of the pressure off of the kidneys and liver.

Exercise Benefits: For those who are unable to participate in rigorous exercise activities, the sauna provides a convenient alternative. Circulation is increased, which gets the blood pumping to other parts of the body for better performance of bodily functions.

Eases Physical Conditions: Arthritis, allergies, skin ailments and chemical sensitivity can all be treated through the therapeutic properties of the sauna. Sauna treatments may also be used to achieve cardiovascular rehabilitation.

Kills Fungus, Bacteria, Parasites and Viruses: When the body temperature is raised, all of these health concerns are treated. It is a low body temperature that allows these impairments to thrive. Numerous body parts are treated through the increase of heat, including the sinuses, ears, eyes, throat and intestines.

Are There Any Disadvantages?

There are many different health benefits attached to the use of a sauna, which far outweigh the disadvantages of using a sauna. The cons to using a sauna are minimal because it is through an abuse of this tradition that mainly leads to problems. Some people have adverse effects to extensive use. This is often seen when a person spends more time within the higher temperature environment than their body can take. Excessive sweating also leads to dehydration, which in the most severe cases causes people to pass out. While saunas can be used to treat sinusitis, bronchitis and allergies, they may also cause respiratory problems through some body systems that reject the dry hair in a sauna. Some people find it difficult to breathe while in the sauna and should find alternate sauna options to enjoy the many advantages of this healthy experience.
