Undoing Sun Damage To Your Skin
If your skin bothers you on an emotional and physical level, you may be a good candidate for a chemical peel. There are a couple different kinds of peels to think about prior to booking that cosmetology appointment.
The nature of a chemical peel is the first thing you need to understand. As the name suggests, it is a chemical solution that is applied to the skin and allowed to soak in. It will then effectively burn off the damaged skin revealing the new skin underneath.
Although it sounds simple, a chemical peel takes time. Your skin does not just fall off in one big go. It is more like peeling after a sunburn. The process can take a few days. As it falls off, however, the new skin underneath will shine through.
Not all chemical peels are equal. The come in three variations ranging from minor to major skin removal. The degree is obviously something to be matched up to the level of damage your skin has experienced from the elements.
The mildest form of peel might be your best choice the first time out. The formal name is a superficial chemical peel. As the name suggests, a diluted acid and carbon dioxide mix is used to remove just the superficial layers of damaged skin.
Next, we move up to the middle strength chemical peel. Trichloroacetic acid is the chemical solution of choice. It will provide the same strength as a second degree burn, and remove moderate levels of damaged skin. It can take a week or more to recover.
The most aggressive chemical peel uses Phenol. It goes deep and does a lot of skin removal. It is so powerful, it can remove color from your skin. Think Michael. Jackson. If you have dark skin, this is probably not the peel for you.
The popularity of chemical peels is on the rise, which means everyone is trying to get in on it. You are nuts if you have a peel done by anyone other than a cosmetic surgeon. If something goes wrong, do you really want an untrained person in charge?
Men have all the luck. They can get wrinkles and sun damaged skin and we call them handsome. A women with the same skin is considered horrific. You can fight the system if you like, but most women just choose to undergo a peel to keep their skin looking good.
