Teaching Children Prayer And Other Principles
Children can be taught to pray by incorporating other principals such as love and patience. As parents we have a responsibility to bring our children up in righteousness. Here are some ideas to help you.
Teach your children to pray out loud. When talking about prayer with your child consider replacing the word "prayer" with the word talk. You have been using the word "talk" with your child since they first started saying words. Praying silently will come later.
While you are teaching your child to pray, discuss the importance of love and patience. These two virtues keep our hearts soft and like Samuel we are able to hear the still small voice of the Lord.
Part of praying is asking the Lord for the things we want and need. When we teach children what love is we help them feel positive and hopeful about their future. Their prayers will be more uplifting and from the heart.
Love is a powerful force. Share with your child how you have nurtured and cared for them since they were born. Help them to understand that this is what the Lord has done for you as well. God is always with us and we should communicate with him often.
We all have learned patience when we pray because as we have grown older we have accepted that God does not immediately answer our prayers. A child, however, has not yet learned this. Therefore, we need to teach them patience.
One of the best ways to teach patience is to share with your child times when you feel impatient and how you cope with that emotion. When you are driving, for example, you want to get to your destination quickly. Consider telling your children that you are going to be patient so you do not put lives in danger. Show that there are natural rewards.
Love and patience are also important lessons when teaching our children to pray. We all have a loving Father In Heaven but when must exercise patience. The Lord knows what is best for us and will answer our prayers in His own good time.
