Goal Setting, Part 3 of 3, Visualizing Your Goals

By George L. Kenney
Oct 7, 2008
There are three articles in this series and this is the third. If you haven't read the first two which discuss using the SMART method and using your emotions, you'll want to read those first. You should enjoy this exercise and make it a part of your daily routine for it to become more effective.

Once you have worked with your goals for several days you will be able to recite them in your sleep, just kidding. However, you will have them pretty well committed to memory. Once you have attained that level go to this step.

You'll want to be in a comfortable position, one that you can maintain for ten to fifteen minutes, in a place where you are not likely to be disturbed. Have your goal cards with you as a reference. Now close your eyes and imagine that you are watching a movie of your goals actually happening. Go through the goals you have on your first card and as you do, feel as though each one is happening right now. An example from what we had in the first articles would go like this:

Picture this, its Wednesday, December 31, 20__ and you're walking toward your bank's entrance. You have a deposit to make and you're feeling tremendous. Its a great day a little cool with a slight breeze and really comfortable. As you enter the lobby, you're still in awe of the beautiful holiday tree with all of its decorations. You even get a scent of the evergreen, its a reminder of a terrific holiday season. You make your deposit and as you glance at your receipt, you get this really "high" feeling. You made your year-end goal $50,000. "Wow, this stuff really works" you think as you leave.

You now have a vision of the new computer in your office, and you remember back to the day of the transaction, the soft music playing in the showroom of the store, the beautiful visual demonstration that the salesperson gave you, the bright and cheerful attitude of the check-out person and the receipt which shows that you paid cash for the computer on the day of purchase. You feel a sense of accomplishment that you were able to purchase exactly the computer and monitor you wanted and pay cash for the transaction. Now you're loading the computer in your vehicle and driving home. You unload the computer, set it up, and you feel the rush of adrenaline as you turn it on and put it through some tasks. You're thrilled by the speed of your new machine. Follow this by visualizing each of the goals on your first goal card.

You night want to take a deep breath and relax in between cards. you want to do everything you can to remember each of your senses while you go through your goals one by one. What will you see, hear, smell, taste and feel as you move through accomplishing each of them? Once you finish your first set of goals (your short term goals) go to the next set and repeat the process. Also, please remember, the more emotion and the more of your senses you bring to this exercise, the more effective it will be for you.

This is the last of a series of three articles about effective goal setting. Remember to use the S.M.A.R.T. method which I outlined in Part One, and to Bring Emotion to your goals as outlined in Part Two. When you follow those guidelines and add visualization exercises, you'll be more likely to reach your goals.
