Is Male Chest Reduction Really Necessary?

By Lisa Ortega

You've no doubt seen some guys who really shouldn't be walking around shirtless on the beach. Their sagging bellies and their man boobs make them a subject of ridicule. However, what you might not know is that these men suffer from genetic problems - not just fat.

For guys who are in such a situation, male chest reduction is an option. Sometimes, genetics don't really have anything to do with the issue of excess male breast tissue. If, for example, a guy has severe asthma and needs to take steroids for it, one of the side effects can be larger-than-normal male breasts.

Male chest reduction is a surgical procedure that hundreds of men undergo every year. Men have various reasons for having the procedure done, but self-esteem is at the top of the list. Some men have had to deal with breasts so prominent that they've actually had to wear special undershirts to make them less noticeable.

However, before a man can just go ahead and decide that he wants to have male chest reduction done, he has to take a few things into consideration. First of all, as much as a man might want to get rid of the excess tissue as soon as possible via male chest reduction, he can only do so if he fits certain requirements.

Most of the candidates for this kind of procedure are men who are of average weight. Men who are significantly overweight are not suitable for this procedure as of yet. The surgeon will first encourage the man to start eating a healthy diet and exercising, because chances are that the excess tissue will go away once the man has reached a healthy weight.

It is important to note that sometimes this procedure is done on men who have actually lost a lot of weight. Where there were once prominent man boobs, there is now just a multitude of sagging skin, which thus gives the appearance of existing prominent man boobs.

In this case, the surgeon will make a small incision below each nipple and first remove any residual fat via some liposuction. Next, the surgeon will tighten the muscles, and remove excess skin. The overall result will be flat, masculine breasts. Before any of this happens, however, the patient will have to be aware of the surgical costs. This procedure costs a few thousand dollars, so it is important to make sure that the necessary financial means are available.

Of course, something else that many prospective patients want to know is the amount of time it will take before results will be seen. Generally, results are immediate, although the patient won't see the full effect of the results until a couple of weeks after the procedure.

As for the recovery time, that will be a week or two, depending on how much work needed to be done on each breast. During the recuperation period, the patient can return to many of his usual activities, provided that they are not too strenuous. Additionally, during the recovery time, the breasts have to be bandaged and the incisions kept clean.
