It could be your mother, father, sister, brother or even someone in your distant family that is suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. It is vital for you to learn how to treat a family member with paranoid schizophrenia. By learning how to treat them life will be easier for all affected. While it's going to be difficult it isn't impossible to learn the correct way to treat a family member with paranoid schizophrenia. You are also going to have to enlist the help of others to cope with this illness.
Those that suffer from paranoid schizophrenia have lost touch with reality. The fact they are not sure of what reality is other than the delusional hallucinations they sometimes have. You don't want to make them more paranoid than they already are or give them reason to distrust you.
You have to be compassionate and understanding with a family member that has paranoid schizophrenia. They can anger easily for no apparent reason and even have hallucinations. The hallucinations may or may not trigger the anger and feelings that they are being watched.
You want to make your family member with paranoid schizophrenia feel as safe as they could possible feel. You never want them to feel that you are a threat to them. You should never appear confrontational when dealing with a family member that has paranoid schizophrenia. Things such as standing directly in front of them and looking them in the eye during the entire conversation should be avoided.
You should stand beside the family member with paranoid schizophrenia instead of directly in front of them. Talking to them from the side and taking on some of their views so the two of you appear to have the same outlook on the world when you are not in complete agreement makes them feel more secure.
You don't want to look them directly in the eye when you talk to them. This can make you appear as if you are being confrontational to a family member with paranoid schizophrenia. You want to shift your focus to other things around them and use third person pronouns to make them more at ease.
When it comes to how to treat a family member with paranoid schizophrenia you can not force them to get treatment of any kind. They will normally be in denial and you have to wait until they come out of denial to have any hopes of helping them. They may volunteer to seek counseling when they come out of denial and finally decide to talk to someone about how they are feeling.
Rationalization has no place in how you treat a family member with paranoid schizophrenia. They will not see the logic behind your rationalizations since they have lost their ability to rationalize. You can not tell them something that is alternative to the beliefs they have since they will see this as a threat to them and it can cause them to become angry.
They do not trust the outside world and you can not force them to trust it. They have to believe that you do not trust the same issues in the real world that they do not trust. When you try to change the views that a family member with paranoid schizophrenia has of the outside world it can cause them to lose trust in you. Their views are developed by hallucinations, fear and misconceptions which can lead them to distrust you if you try to tell them that they are wrong.
How to treat a family member with paranoid schizophrenia will be dependant on several factors which will each come to light at various times. They can be angry and lashing out one minute and the next they could be terrified of the entire world for no tangible reason. You have to take your cues from them. While you do not want to over indulge them you do not want to make them lash out and become a danger to themselves either.
