Italy's Venice - A Wonderful Holiday Destination
Venice is more than just another romantic place. It's more than a city filled with art treasures, and it doesn't just host a multitude of some fine architecture. Venice is all of this and much, much more.
One example among many different reasons to visit Venice is St. Mark's Basilica. The church is a known rival of Rome's St. Peter's and although it's not as large or grand, St. Mark's is still an amazing sight that is renowned as one of the finest of its kind.
The Campanile can be found outside the Basilica di San Marco, which served as its belltower. Previously this place has been a military lookout during dangerous times to help keep Venice safe. Nowadays the church serves no purpose other than aesthetically but the sight is delightful and cherished by tourists who are lucky enough to visit.
The Piazza San Marco (St Mark's Square) hosts them both among other things. The Square is a fabulous sight in itself, but also serves as a great gathering spot for tourists. A substantial clock tower is housed here, and the square provides access to the Doge's palace. A lack of traffic and vehicle noise is a huge reason that the Square lends itself to Venice's grace and charm.
Canals and gondola rides are what Venice is best known for. Whether sailing down the Grand Canal or along any of the dozens of other secondary waterways, a beautiful view is waiting.
The Rialto can be found along the Grand Canal, along with other main bridges that cross it. Moving up the Canal in a vaporetto or in a gondola provides some of the best vantage points for spectacular views.
To find outstanding examples of Venetian architecture, access to the loggia of the Ca' d'Oro - the Golden House - is located on the Canal and a short Vaporetto ride can get you to the Palazzo Grassi.
In very different styles, you can find more examples another boat ride away, such as the Villas of Venice. Villa Pisani began in the early 1700s and the Versailles of Paris was used as the model. Palladio who is a world famous architect offers a large collection of his work at La Rotunda and Padova houses many other works form other artists such as the Villa Contarini- Camerini.
Some islands to visit that are only a short trip from the main city are Murano and Burano. Murano offers famed glass works by artisans of Venice who are world renowned for their skills. Burano is a museum offering displays of lace the craftsmen in Venice have been creating for centuries.
See a large collection of the master Renaissance painter Tintoretto and the Scuola Grande di San Rocco and see work by others at the Gallerie dell'Accademia. La Fenice offers other arts of Venice such as paintings, architecture and opera all in one place.
The 2 weeks before lent is the best time to visit, as the Carnevale lets you become a theater performer. You'll be able to take a mask home for memories, and the experience will definitely last a lifetime.
