The Hybrid Car: Advantages and Uses

By Kevin Bailey
Oct 21, 2008
Along with the destruction of our environment through standard fuel cars, and the uprising on gas prices, hybrid cars have recently become very popular. This is because they are not as harmful to the environment due to the fact they run on both electricity and fuel, thus emitting less pollution. This also cuts the cost of gas down, resulting in saving money overtime.

The description of a hybrid car is basically a combination of a gasoline engine and an electric motor, with the sole purpose of providing enough power while maintaining as fuel-efficient as possible. In comparison, these hybrid cars get better gas milage, and are much more convenient to use than a car powered solely by an electric motor.

Often times, a hybrid car will withstand better fuel efficiency while in stop and go traffic or midst the streets, this is because the car is essentially running on the electric motor until around 20 miles per hour. At the same time, the car possesses enough power to maintain substantial speeds on the highway, as well as accelerating fast enough to not hinder traffic.

The very interesting thing about these electric motors, is how they are kept constantly charged. The energy normally lost in a standard fuel car from coasting, breaking, and from the engine itself, is funneled into energy for the electric motor. Thus, there is no reason for plugging in of anything at all, which is a huge bonus.

As far as advantages go when comparing them to regular gasoline engine type cars, there are quite a few:

1. Less pollution

Our ozone layer is constantly being destroyed by the pollution that is found in the air, one of the factors of the greenhouse effect. These harmful chemicals are not only dangerous to the environment, the ozone layer, but our health as well. In California, the air's pollution level is anywhere from two to ten times the level that needs to be maintained for a healthy environment.

Having a hybrid vehicle consumes less fuel; therefore giving off less bad pollutants. Anything that can be done to slow down the process of global warming is better for us, and the use of electricity as a power source poses no danger at all.

2. Less gasoline use, more miles

This is one of the main reasons that hybrids are so popular, because it does not always use fuel, it allows for better efficiency, which will result in less expensive and fewer trips to the gas station.

3. Lower taxes for hybrid owners

Tax rebates are given to hybrid owners, therefore you will be able to get additional savings when taxes come.

4. Resale value is higher.

There are many gasoline engine cars that you buy brand new, and a year later the blue book value is already sliced in half. With a hybrid car, as long as you keep it in good condition, the value will stay higher longer.

5. Efficiency and performance are what defines hybrid Cars

Comparing hybrid to regular, the engine is much smaller with the hybrid due to having two sources of power where the gasoline only has one. This means the smaller ones are closer to the power necessity of engines that will provide sufficient performance.

6. This technology is the best thing to combat air pollution and slow down the greenhouse effect

Hybrid cars uses lesser fuel and a groundbreaking technology that may avoid possible damages to the environment caused by the usual cars

Although the hybrid car is very useful for those who can afford it, there are still many families and people who can't. But once this price drops a few thousand dollars, there are sure to be much more hybrids on the streets.
