Water Damage Causes: If You See It, Stop It
Water damage can be likened to a disease. It has the capacity to destroy different items, yet it can be prevented and treated. Just like a disease which can be caused by several factors like microorganisms and genetic predispositions, water damage can also be caused by several factors. Some of these causes are visible and can be monitored accordingly, while other causes are much harder to decipher. Here then is a list of the things that you need to watch out for when it comes to finding out what causes water damage.
Leaking roof, anyone?
Just like every part of the house, the roof must also be maintained and cleaned every now and then. The materials used in the creation of your roof are not made to last forever - they wear out, thus exposing your decking to labile weather conditions that may damage it. During rainy months, rainwater may seep in and accumulate, thus producing moisture that further cause damage. This scenario can be intensified if you have flat roof drains, since these may hold water for long periods of time, leading to a possibility of roof leaks, or worse, roof collapse.
Hence, the moment you experience a roof leak, act right away! If you cannot fix the roof problem yourself, you can ask a water damage restoration professional to do the work for you.
There's something in the attic
The problem in the attic also stems out from poor maintenance. The attic is one of the most neglected areas of the house, and so it is not easy to spot poor ventilation and insulation in this part of the house. What is bad in this poorly-maintained insulation is that it allows heat to escape, so that snow that has accumulated on the roof turns into water. The result is, of course, water damage.
Window and door check
Simply making sure that your windows and doors are correctly installed can help you in preventing moisture from penetrating your house, thus preventing water damage. Again, proper maintenance is the key. If there is something wrong with your windows and doors, fix them immediately.
Swimming drains and gutters
Water damage would not occur if your gutters are not clogged in the first place. However, due to poor maintenance once again, clogged gutters can result to overflowing water, and this water has no way to go but to the interior walls. This also goes the same for drains. Moreover, these defective gutters and drains can result to a flooded basement. Remember that cleaning up water damage due to a flood is a pretty difficult task, so might as well just repair your drains before it is too late.
Rain, rain, go away
And of course, who would forget rainwater as the leading cause of water damage. This is particularly true during wet months, since rainwater collects beneath the floor of your house. The solution to this is simple-provide a proper and much improved drainage system, starting off with proper maintenance.
Knowing the causes of water damage will enable an individual to solve the problem right away, hence preventing further damage.
